Kottayam, Kerala: The continuous heavy rainfall has led to widespread flooding and waterlogging in parts of Kottayam district and forced schools to close as precautionary measures.
Many low-lying areas Kodimatha, Thazhathangadi and Illikkal are still under water after heavy rains caused nearby rivers and drainage channels to overflow. Floodwater flooded residential areas and many houses and commercial buildings were partly underwater.
Residents are trying to protect their belongings from the weather and keep up with the situation.
The heavy rainfall has cut off street connections in many parts of the district and roads in many parts of the district are flooded and traffic congestion is so bad that much of the district has collapsed. Mud and waterlogged streets have kept traffic in their way and it is hard to drive in the morning and evening, and cars are stuck in mud-damaged roads and traffic is impeded even for the commuters.
Emergency teams and local administration staff in the district are monitoring vulnerable areas of the district and those least likely to be flooded and landslide prone.
District authorities closed schools and colleges in Kottayam as a safety measure. In case of a bad weather situation we have decided to protect students and staff. We have advised students to stay inside and wait until the school district is reopened.
People living near rivers and in low-lying areas should keep watch, especially when weather conditions are bad, they said. Residents shouldn’t be in too much risk of traveling in heavy rain because of the heavy rain and travel is unnecessary during heavy rain, the authorities said.
The rain has also damaged local businesses in the area. Shops in flooded areas have reported damage to goods after water has flooded commercial buildings. Business owners are hoping for a better weather forecast for the next few days.
Kerala experiences monsoon rainfall in the monsoon season and the lowermost regions are prone to inundation because of overflowing rivers and backwaters at this time of year. Kottayam is particularly prone to flooding due to overflowing rivers and backwaters.
Local disaster management teams are constantly monitoring and coordinating with all departments to respond to crises as quickly as possible.
The weather service forecasts indicate heavy rainfall will continue in parts of Kerala and they are warning that authorities should be on guard.

Residents should follow weather predictions, avoid crossing flooded roads, and report any emergencies to local disaster management authorities early on.
Because water levels in many areas are still very high, restoration work will only be able to begin once the rains cease. The situation is being closely monitored, and measures are being put in place to relieve those in need if conditions worsen.
The current rains are once more an example of Kerala’s perennial monsoon problem and show the need for preparedness, timely warnings and community solidarity to minimize the effects of adverse weather.
Citizens are advised to be cautious and follow the district authorities’ advice till the weather returns to normal.
