An evening safari at the renowned Ranebennur Blackbuck Sanctuary took an exhilarating and unexpected turn yesterday when a leopard suddenly emerged, sending a jolt of surprise through the visitors, including local MLA Prakash Koliwad and Bovi Corporation Chairman N. Ramappa.
The incident unfolded during an evening safari intended for spotting deer and the famous blackbucks that call the sanctuary home. As the group was enjoying the serene surroundings and the sight of blackbuck herds gracefully leaping across the landscape, a camouflaged leopard, which had been lurking in the bushes, suddenly revealed itself.
MLA Prakash Koliwad, who was on the safari with Chairman N. Ramappa, quickly managed to capture the rare sight on his mobile phone. The sudden appearance of the big cat was reportedly a startling moment for Chairman Ramappa and the other safari attendees, though quickly turned into awe.
"We went for the safari to see the deer and blackbucks," said a person present during the safari. "It was thrilling to see the herds of blackbucks jumping around. But then, this leopard just appeared out of nowhere! It was a complete shock, but an incredible sight to behold. MLA Prakash Koliwad was quick enough to record it on his phone."
The Ranebennur Blackbuck Sanctuary, primarily known for its thriving population of blackbucks, also harbors other wildlife, including wolves, jackals, wild boars, and various bird species. Leopard sightings, while not unheard of, are considered rare and a special treat for wildlife enthusiasts.
The footage captured by MLA Koliwad is now circulating, highlighting the rich biodiversity of the Haveri district's wildlife sanctuary and the unpredictable beauty of nature. The incident has certainly added an unforgettable chapter to the safari experiences of those present, turning a routine wildlife viewing into a truly memorable encounter with one of nature's most elusive predators.
