Government officials of the state, however, said it was progressing to conduct an independent and wide-ranging investigation into the matter and that this was a major step.

The calls for a CBI investigation seemed only to have mounted against a backdrop of pressure from various factions and social media campaigns, and protests across the country, calling on the government to explain why things were the way they were regarding Twisha Sharma’s death, the official sources said.

The case had taken national attention after allegations emerged, the family members’ concerns and supporters’ inquiries remained unanswered, and people in the know were also concerned. Local authorities had initially begun investigating the case, but calls for a central agency investigation started growing as attention was drawn to the matter, and it drew national attention.

Critics and activists said an independent, nonpartisan committee was called for investigating a high-profile and sensitive case like this to be in place to gain public confidence.

The state's government recommendation now allows for a transfer of the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation pending approval and formal consent. Then, transferring officially, the CBI would have the Central Bureau of Investigation check the matter, take notes on what was submitted in writing, conduct a forensic examination and so on, all manner of information that might pertain to a case.

On the internet, people show such emotional responses while demanding justice and openness in a matter like Twisha Sharma's death. It takes this level of commitment, compassion and patience to get the case successfully through the system. The social media chatter rumbled on at an epic scale, and hashtags based on the case went viral on some social networking sites for a few days.

Supporters have called on the authorities, and some of their long-standing pleas implored them to press ahead, carrying out a fair and independent investigation without delving into politics or turning a blind eye.

Officials still don’t have all of the answers to what they heard after the preliminary investigation carried out by local police, based on the local police’s initial report. But the suggestion of a CBI probe is an indication that the government is treating the case seriously, given the level of public anxiety that swirls around it.

Generally speaking, a CBI exam is advised when local law enforcement officials feel that the public is relatively interested in an investigation, the issues are serious, results can be felt throughout multiple states, and confidence in the authorities may be undermined. In sensitive cases, a central agency investigation is seen as a source of neutrality and adds weight to the investigation.

Some have been welcoming of the decision; others have called for immediate action and accountability. Yet the family of Twisha Sharma is demanding transparency and justice. If it is finally formally referred to a case, the CBI may register a fresh FIR or move forward based on whatever court records they can find (the inquiry files of the state police).

It is probably going to do independent questioning, comb through online evidence, analyse the data presented in forensic investigations and assemble the timeline of the death. The case has also revived debates over social media’s impact on high-profile investigations.

Public pressure through online efforts has increasingly been a major force behind increasing transparency from authorities in tough cases. Authorities told the public not to speculate and let the police work as the investigation dictates. Officials also warned of spreading unconfirmed news or speculation, which could damage the investigation's credibility.

That investigation is now gearing up to run more like a probable CBI investigation, and everyone is going to be reading findings from the central agency in the investigation and if questions arise from it that will respond to whatever questions have emerged as to Twisha Sharma’s death since the case first emerged.
