A shocking and near-fatal accident occurred on Thursday near Kana, Surathkal, on the outskirts of Mangaluru city, highlighting a common, yet dangerous, hazard for pillion riders wearing traditional attire. A mother, riding pillion with her son, was violently thrown from the motorcycle after her saree became entangled in the bike’s rear wheel.
The Frightening Incident Captured on Camera
The accident took place when the mother and son were traveling at speed on a motorcycle. The woman’s saree, dangling freely, was suddenly caught in the spokes and chain of the rear wheel. The entanglement instantly dragged the saree, pulling the woman off the seat and onto the road.
The entire incident was captured on the CCTV camera of a nearby bus, providing a terrifying view of the sudden and forceful fall.
Negligence and Lucky Escape
Further scrutiny of the footage revealed two crucial details that exacerbated the situation:
- Speeding: The son, who was driving the motorcycle, was traveling at a high speed.
- No Helmets: Crucially, neither the mother nor the son were wearing helmets at the time of the incident.
Despite the high-speed fall and the lack of protective gear, the mother miraculously escaped life-threatening injuries. She was immediately attended to by passersby and rushed for medical care. The fortunate survival, however, stands as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of riding without a helmet.
The incident has prompted traffic police to reiterate warnings about the extreme necessity of wearing protective gear and exercising caution when wearing loose clothing while riding two-wheelers.
