Event Details

The Decorative Material Fuels the Firing Eyewitnesses said the blaze began in a corner of the wedding garden, which was being highly decorated for a planned function. The addition of materials that are highly inflammable, such as:

  • Synthetic curtains and drapes
  • Plywood structures and thermocol decor
  • Plastic floral arrangements

The dry weather and gently blowing winds allowed the fire to spread quickly throughout the entire farm. Then the fire broke out at night, late into the day’s preparations but thankfully the venue was mostly empty and there was no mass casualty possibility.

Firefighter and Containment

The raging inferno was fought by firefighters for more than four hours before being brought to heel. At first, the narrow lanes of routes that led to the area close to the Sheetla Mata Temple also prevented large fire engines from getting to the area, however, the fire teams worked in a barrier to the area to check the fire from jumping to neighbouring buildings and a nearby petrol pump.

Current Status

  • Casualties: None confirmed injuries or deaths as of Friday morning. Damage: The main stage, dining area and temporary guest rooms have been totally destroyed. The financial damages are thought to amount to several lakhs.
  • Cause: Fire officials are continuing with formal investigations, but a short circuit is the suspected cause at the temporary electrical wiring for the decorative lighting, authorities said.

Wedding Season Safety concerns

It was another episode that highlights compliance with fire safety issues at open-air wedding venues in Gurugram. Many of these farms also do not have sufficient internal fire extinguisher or fire sprinkler systems in place, says the fire department, and depend on outside emergency services.

As part of this, the Gurugram district administration is expected to issue a new advisory to banquet hall owners on the subject, advising them to conduct safety audits at banquet halls especially during peak wedding season where temporary electrical loads are the highest.
