Mathura Road Accident: 4 Youths Drown as Car Plunges into Canal

The Mathura city has been under heavy spirits after an awful RTA accident on the streets late Wednesday night that killed four young men. The tragedy took place after a speeding vehicle lost control on a highway and ran into a roadside building in a canal deep enough to prevent the victims from escaping.

The Fatal Collision

The incident occurred on the outskirts of the Mathura district. Eyewitnesses and preliminary police reports claimed that there were four youths driving a sedan at a high speed. The driver lost the steering while he was navigating a steep curve next to the canal. The vehicle initially crashed into a giant cemented water tank situated near the road. The impact was so strong, it caused the car to pull off the embankment and into the rapidly moving water in the canal.

Recovery and Operations

Local residents who heard the loud crash rushed to the scene and at once alerted the local police station. Due to darkness and depth of canal, initial rescue efforts proved difficult as well. A group of divers and a crane were ordered to search the submerged vehicle by the local administration to extract the vehicle.

The car was then extracted from the water following hours of intensive searching. Unfortunately, all four of the occupants were also found dead in the vehicle. They were also believed to have been knocked unconscious by the initial blow of the tank, or to have been unable to force the doors to pop open because of the pressure of the water and been drowned.

Identification of the Victims

The victims, aged 20 to 25, lived in nearby communities. Their bodies are being transported to the district hospital for post-mortem examination. Family members arrived on site early this morning and the scene was one of deep grief after the remains were identified.

Police Investigation

Mathura police also filed a case and are investigating the specific cause of the accident. “We are continuing to determine if he was under the influence, a mechanical failure, a low visibility or all of it. The hit on the cemented tank indicates the car was driving very fast,” a senior police person said. The tragic crash once again exposed the hazards of driving too fast on rural highways, particularly on bodies of water without good safety railings or barriers.
