A fresh political and legal controversy has erupted as a BJP delegation led by Lok Sabha MP Bansuri Swaraj announced that it will file a police complaint against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Independent MP Pappu Yadav for a political skit staged on the Parliament premises.
BJP has said that the performance hurt Hindu religious sentiments and amounted to a mockery of Sanatan culture. Opposition leaders held a street theatre-style protest over donations to the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.

Bansuri Swaraj criticised the performance and said that it should not be seen as a form of political protest or dissent but as a manifestation of political dissent.
“Rahul Gandhi hurt Hindu sentiments. That Parliament skit was neither a protest nor a dissent; it was a mockery of Sanatan culture,” she said.
The proposed legal action has intensified the political row surrounding the skit, which was performed during an Opposition protest at the Parliament complex. Satire and symbolic acting were employed in the performance to highlight allegations of misuse or misappropriation of Ram Mandir donations, the journalist said.
The Opposition leaders involved in the protest framed the skit as a political protest that was a political display and a call for accountability. But BJP leaders and some religious groups felt that the way the issue was portrayed was disrespectful to Hindu people’s faith and the Ram Mandir’s importance.
The Ram Mandir is deeply spiritual and cultural in significance to millions of Hindus. Thus, the temple’s political commentary becomes a sensitive matter very soon, and it is not only when critics say they perceive religious symbols or religious practices as having been used in the wrong way.
Bansuri Swaraj’s comments reflect the BJP’s position that the controversy goes beyond ordinary political criticism. It crossed the line between democratic dissent and conduct that allegedly violated Sanatan traditions, the party said.
The BJP delegation is expected to submit its complaint to the police and seek legal action against Rahul Gandhi and Pappu Yadav. The exact sections cited in the proposed complaint and the legal grounds on which action will be sought are expected to become clear after the delegation formally files its representation.
The development is part of a larger legal case against the Parliament skit. Seers and other complainants in Varanasi had approached the police, saying the performance hurt religious sentiments, reported ET News. In connection with this incident, Varanasi Police then filed a case against Rahul Gandhi, Pappu Yadav and another Opposition MP.
The registration of a case does not establish that the accused committed an offence. Any allegations will be investigated and legal scrutiny, and the individuals named in the complaint are entitled to due process.
The controversy has also caused a wider debate on the limits of political satire and protest. Opposition parties have traditionally used symbolic performances, slogans and street theatre to draw attention to allegations against governments. Such demonstrations are generally viewed as part of political expression.
But the BJP is adamant that political criticism should not involve acts which it says are disrespectful of religious beliefs or sacred traditions.
Thus the dispute is likely to become a larger political one over freedom of expression, the right to protest and the duty of public representatives when it comes to religion.
Rahul Gandhi and Pappu Yadav’s side may argue that the skit was aimed at raising questions over alleged financial irregularities and was not intended to insult Hinduism or Sanatan culture. Any official response from the leaders could further shape the political narrative.
The BJP’s move could also put pressure on the Opposition to explain what purpose and symbolism were put into the performance. There will be another division of the ruling party and Opposition leaders with the current political debate in place.
On this basis, as the BJP delegation prepares to file its complaint, the police response will be at least as much of the focus as a matter of course and will be on any further legal action taken.
Thus far, the issue is still a politically charged one, and there are two competing interpretations of the Parliament skit. The BJP believes Hindu sentiments were hurt, while the organizers of the protest would interpret it as political satire and dissent on the Ram Mandir donations.
