The victims, all residents of Indore village in Dindori, were returning from a social gathering organized by a private coaching class when the tragedy struck. Preliminary reports said the Maruti XL6 driver lost control of the vehicle and it turned into a deep well belonging to a local person.

At about 10:00 PM on April 3, 2026, the Dindori Police sent the duty officer and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to the site, and the NDRF were on site by 10:00 PM. The rescue operation was very difficult due to the depth of the water and the big crowd of onlookers at the site. With two hydra cranes and the help of local skilled swimmers, the vehicle was finally lifted out of the well at about 12:15 AM.

The deceased have been identified as Sunil Dattu Dargode (32), Reshma Sunil Dargude (27), Asha Anil Dargude (32), Khushi (Shristi) Anil Dargude (14), Madhuri Anil Dargude (13), Shreyas Anil Dargude (11), Shravani Anil Dargude (11), Samriddhi Rajendra Dargude (7), and Rakhi (Gunwanti) Sunil Dargude. The bodies were recovered from the submerged vehicle and sent to the Government Hospital in Dindori for post-mortem examination.

The Dindori Police have registered a case and initiated a detailed probe into the mechanical or situational causes of the crash. Initial investigation indicates a driver’s failure, but the administration has said that a clear picture will emerge only after the technical investigation is completed. Indore is a village in mourning as the community grieves the loss of almost an entire household in one night.

Safety Note: Night Driving Precautions

  • Maintain Moderate Speed: Less visibility at night significantly decreases reaction time.
  • Be Aware of Roadside Hazards: Rural roads are often unimpeded from barriers near water bodies and high drops to be warned of roadside hazards.
  • Drivers should avoid distractions: Make sure the driver is well-rested, especially when transporting large families at night.
