New Karnataka CM D.K. Shivakumar Allocates ₹2,000 Crore for Bengaluru Road Repairs on Day 1

In a strategic move on first day of the term, newly appointed Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has announced a total of ₹2,000 crore for urgent road repair across Greater Bengaluru and Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) limits for the first time.

The decision came in his first cabinet meeting on Wednesday, setting the tone for his administration’s priorities. The money would pay for broad damage from recent heavy rains that have left large stretches of the city’s roads in a precarious state. The Chief Minister has said restoration work should be done within three or four months and that should not be considered as a non-negotiable deadline for the municipal agencies to do so.

A Familiar Challenge

This is not Mr. Shivakumar’s first attempt to tackle the city’s perennial pothole problem. His new allocation is consistent with previous efforts; a ₹750 crore package approved eight months ago saw the filling of more than 13,000 potholes in the city. Although this initiative helped for a while, the damage that is done at the beginning of every monsoon season continues to frustrate Bengaluru’s commuters.

Mixed Reactions from Citizens

The announcement has received a cautious welcome. Some residents welcome the swift financial commitment, claiming it is a sign of responsive governance. Skeptics have questioned the long-term efficacy of such large outlays, pointing to previous funds that failed to deliver lasting solutions.

Critics say that without addressing the main drainage system failures, quick patchwork repairs will only lead to more damage and repair. There are those who call for sustainable solutions, including extensive white-topping of most of the major corridors and integrated stormwater drain improvements to finally break the costly cycle of temporary patches.

For now, all eyes are on the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to ensure this ₹2,000 crore translates into durable roads rather than just another headline.
