Grief has taken root across Raichur city with the death of three hopeful young men in a road accident Saturday morning. The accident happened in the busy Basaveshwara Circle, one of the city's major landmarks, when a fast truck crashed into a motorcycle with no survivors among the people on the two-wheeled vehicle.
The Victims and the Incident
The deceased were known to be Mohammed Ali (24), Noor Mohammed (19), and Fayaz (26). All three resided in Sukhani Colony within the limits of Raichur city. The three were said to have been traveling on one motorcycle, from Basaveshwara Circle to Chandramouleshwara Circle, when the tragedy occurred. Based on eyewitness accounts, it was reported that the impact was so strong that all three youths were thrown off the vehicle and suffered fatal head and internal wounds. Local residents and commuters immediately gathered to help the victims on the ground although reports suggested that the victims breathed their last right before medical help got to them.
Hit-and-Run Chaos
The truck in the tragedy was said to have been travelling down the road from Hyderabad, and was heading toward the pilgrimage town of Mantralayam. But while trucking away from the incident, the trucker ran away with the vehicle and instead of calling the authorities or reporting the accident, it was more of a hit-and-run chase. The mangled remains of the motorcycle and the bodies of the victims left Basaveshwara Circle in a tense environment. Residents were shocked about the speed of heavy vehicles passing through city circles as they passed by the roads of the vicinity of the major interstate routes, including those in Hyderabad and Mantralayam.
Police Response and Investigation
The Raichur Traffic Police arrived on the spot, soon after they got the news. They carried out a preliminary spot examination and moved the bodies to the Raichur District Hospital, for post-mortem examinations. “We have confirmed a case and we are verifying the CCTV of the cameras that were installed at Basaveshwara Circle and other neighbouring junctions, so that the registration number for the fleeing truck can be recognized,” the police officer who was responsible for this case said. “We conclude that the driver’s negligence and the heavy speed of the vehicle appear to be the main factors behind this incident of loss of life.”
Mohammed Ali, Noor Mohammed and Fayaz’s families have been devastated by the news. The three were noted as close friends who would frequently meet in Sukhani Colony. Three young individuals in the same local area have disappeared and it brought gloom to the whole area.
While the investigation into the absconding driver drifts and searches continues, the incident remains a sobering reminder of a call for cracking down on traffic at certain major city junctions to ensure heavy vehicles don’t accelerate out of control in civilian-heavy urban areas.
