Heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag area has brought water levels of the rivers Alaknanda and Mandakini to record levels and public safety officers have been issuing a public safety warning. Fast-flowing rivers are dangerous for residents and tourists as they are often accompanied by strong currents and flash floods and are prone to flooding, they said.
Officials have been constantly announcing over loudspeakers in vulnerable areas that people should not go near the rivers. Even a slight increase in rainfall in the upper Himalayan regions can cause a sudden increase in river levels, making riverbanks extremely dangerous to people, the administration said.
The Rudraprayag District Administration has also advised the public to report any disaster-related incident including landslides, flooding, or road blockages in a timely manner to the District Emergency Operations Centre. Emergency response teams are on alert, ready to respond if anything were to develop in the current monsoon situation.

Heavy rain is affecting a number of areas of Uttarakhand and there is a high risk of landslides and road traffic on hill roads disrupted and road construction is affected by heavy rainfall. Weather conditions as well as river levels are being watched and disaster management agencies are all working closely to keep the safety of people in the country.
The Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers have great religious and geographical significance and have attracted thousands of pilgrims and tourists during the Char Dham Yatra season. But the administration is advising people not to take photographs or stand near swollen riverbanks where water currents can become unpredictable.
Local police, disaster management personnel and district officials are monitoring sensitive areas to prevent people from entering those areas. Residents in low-lying areas are also supposed to be on guard and receive regular weather bulletins and district announcements.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) is predicting continued rainfall in areas of Uttarakhand and warned of increased river discharge and localized flooding in the state. Tourists to the hill state should check weather and road conditions before going there.
Public cooperation is crucial during monsoon season, the administration has said. People are told not to spread rumors on social media and to rely only on official information available from district administration and disaster management agencies.
As heavy rains continue to pour down on the Himalayan region, the authorities are on high alert, and all measures are taken to minimize risk. Citizens and tourists are advised to be safe, to keep an eye on the roads, to stay safe from danger and to report to authorities immediately if there is a disaster or obstruction.
