Police have been deployed in large numbers around the Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) Dam in Mandya district ahead of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s planned protest against the release of Cauvery water to neighbouring Tamil Nadu. All the attention has been focused on the dam area, as BJP leaders and supporters will gather to express concern over Karnataka's water supply in the vicinity of the hydromax to be released to the state.
The protest is centred around the Cauvery water release issue, which has been a sensitive and politically charged issue for decades in Karnataka. The BJP has attacked the release of water to Tamil Nadu and is going to question the Karnataka government’s handling of the situation at a time when the water supply and the needs of farmers are very sensitive for Karnataka.

The KRS Dam, built on the Cauvery River, is one of the most important reservoirs in Karnataka. It plays a significant role in providing water for irrigation, drinking purposes, and other purposes in various parts of the state. Any decision related to releasing water from the reservoir has to be taken with great attention in Cauvery basin regions, with agriculture heavily dependent on reservoir storage and seasonal rainfall.
Police were also stationed in front of the dam and along key roads leading to the dam ahead of the demonstration, police sources said. Security arrangements were beefed up to prevent any untoward incident and for the protest to be peaceful. We expect authorities to monitor the movement of protesters and control access to sensitive areas around the reservoir.
The BJP’s protest will be about the state government’s obligation to protect Karnataka’s interests and ensure that sufficient water to farmers and residents is available. Party leaders will also question the reservoir’s water level, rainfall and agricultural activity (e.g. water releases).
The Cauvery water-sharing issue has for years led to political fights and public protests in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The dispute is over the sharing of river water and has been resolved through legal, administrative and institutional mechanisms. But water-sharing directions are often contested when the rainfall is less or reservoirs are less filled.
BJP leaders will insist that water release decisions must be based on Karnataka’s irrigation scheme, drinking water requirements and the interests of farmers. The party insisted that the state government should clearly state the rationale for water release and that water in the major reservoirs should be made available to the public.
The increased police presence at the KRS Dam signals the administration’s position on keeping law and order and the freedom of democratic protest. Police personnel will remain on the scene throughout the demonstration as well to prevent protesters from entering restricted areas or causing disturbances to daily life near the dam.
The protest will also bring political pressure to the Karnataka government as the Cauvery issue still plays a role in public opinion in the southern part of the state. Political parties have often used it to argue for farmers, water security and Karnataka’s right over river resources.
As the BJP is going to hold its protest, the government is monitoring the situation in Mandya. Security arrangements are being made to guarantee that the gathering goes on peacefully, so as not to affect the safety of the KRS Dam and public movement.
