Siddaramaiah has been appointed to the Congress Working Committee (CWC), which is the highest decision-making body of the Indian National Congress. This is a significant recognition for the party leadership after Siddaramaiah stepped down from the Chief Minister's post.
The order appointing Siddaramaiah to the CWC was made by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge. The Congress Working Committee is the party's most powerful policy-making and strategic body and decides the nature of the political direction of the party, organisational, and election strategies.
According to political sources, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had offered Siddaramaiah a Rajya Sabha seat and even asked him to quit the Chief Minister post. Siddaramaiah, however, declined the Rajya Sabha seat and resigned as Chief Minister of Karnataka. He later publicly revealed the offer in a press conference and reiterated that he did not want to go to the Rajya Sabha.
Since his resignation, Congress leadership has now entrusted him with a key national role by appointing him to the Congress Working Committee. The elevation puts Siddaramaiah in the leadership of the party and makes him a role model and a national player in Congress policy and strategy.
What is CWC membership?
The Congress Working Committee is the highest executive body in the Congress party and is responsible for major political and organisational decisions. Widely viewed as the party’s most powerful committee, the CWC develops policies, investigates political developments and determines the party’s policy on critical national issues.
Membership in the CWC is an important position. It is a position that gives leaders not only recognition in their respective states but also significant influence on national-level decision-making. Siddaramaiah has been appointed by the party leadership to the committee, signalling their continued trust in his experience, political background, and contributions to the Congress.
Political analysts say the appointment enhances Siddaramaiah's position within the Congress and will ensure he will maintain his role in the party’s future at both the state and national levels and will continue to contribute significantly to it.
