When network search and power-hungry radios are turned off, the device draws power more efficiently and is much cooler during the charging process.
In the long term, a lower temperature during charging is very important to maintaining long-term battery life: high heat is the main cause of depleted lithium-ion capacity and battery swelling. And keeping the phone cool maintains the power output and is good for the internal components over years of use. Yes, airplane mode is not nice to have to turn off your phone at night or when you need to go on a break for a few hours and not be on the internet, but it will charge your phone safely and efficiently and last a long time.
