On 9 February 2026, Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman, Hon’ble Union Minister of Finance & Corporate Affairs, met and discussed with Shri Prem Singh Tamang (Golay), Hon’ble Chief Minister of Sikkim, in a cordial and positive manner emanating from the very robust partnership that is at the heart of the Union and the State.
It is a key day to reconfirm those shared commitments to the acceleration of economic development, the improvement in institutional cooperation and the ensuring of the distribution of proceeds to the people of all regions. They both reiterated the need for continued support on policy, effective governance and joint action as a means to progress in a more inclusive manner.
There was clear conversation on India’s most vital sectors for development that were being stimulated, namely, agriculture, entrepreneurship, infrastructure development and financial empowerment. The talks added to the emphasis on further creating such opportunities that will ensure investment, better livelihood, and more balanced regional development.
There was appreciation of Sikkim’s great leadership in eco-friendly policy-making and organic farming in the conversation. The state’s strategy for sustainable development — supported by grassroots involvement and administrative resolve — remains an important model for others to replicate. These types of initiatives show that when you have focused leadership and long-term thinking, people and the planet can do good as well.
The emphasis on ongoing collaboration between Centre and State levels to face new challenges and leverage new opportunities was emphasised at the meeting. Positive interactions of this kind also reinforce each inter-relationship, deepen understanding and create synergy that helps synchronize the national priorities to get the national goals.
It was a well-rounded exchange in that discussion ending on a positive note, where both sides showed a collective commitment to leverage these existing synergies to complement each other and help build on them to a future of resilience, sustainability and inclusive prosperity.
