A political storm is brewing in Tamil Nadu as a dispute over the next prime ministerial candidate has reportedly involved Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and its alliance partner, the Congress.
The dispute gained momentum when the Public Works Minister Aadhav Arjuna said that the next prime minister of India should come from South India. The statement opened a wider political debate, and TVK leaders and supporters increasingly projected party chief and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Chandrasekhar Joseph Vijay as a potential national leader ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
Although TVK has not yet named Vijay as its prime ministerial candidate, the speculation has apparently upset Congress leaders who are now looking to position Rahul Gandhi as one of the main challengers to Narendra Modi in the next general elections as the front-runner for Prime Minister and the Congress candidates.
Vijay vs Rahul Gandhi: A Potential Alliance Flashpoint
The dispute is especially concerning because TVK and Congress both need each other to maintain their numbers in government.
TVK, which was the largest party in Tamil Nadu assembly elections, apparently fell short of the majority mark. The 234-member Assembly requires 118 seats for a simple majority.
TVK won 108 seats while DMK and AIADMK secured 59 and 47 seats, respectively, according to the figures provided.
The party therefore needed more support to form and sustain a government. Congress then extended support, as did other parties, to enable TVK to cross the majority threshold.
The alliance has political significance for both sides. TVK benefits from Congress’ legislative support, while Congress sees an opportunity to expand its political footprint in Tamil Nadu by aligning with Vijay’s considerable popularity.
Why Congress Needs TVK
Congress has been reported to have secured ministerial representation in the state after a long period of time dating back to 1967. The party currently has five MLAs, and if it wins the alliance with TVK, the party could better organise itself and take part in upcoming elections.
Vijay’s popularity, particularly among younger voters and sections of the electorate across Tamil Nadu, is also viewed as a potential advantage for Congress.
But the issue of who could lead the national opposition campaign in 2029 has become a sensitive issue.
If TVK refuses to endorse Rahul Gandhi as the alliance's prime ministerial candidate, Congress leaders have said that their ministers could resign from the government.
Such a move could immediately put pressure on the government’s legislative strength.
What would happen to the government if Congress withdrew support?
The arithmetic of the Assembly is crucial
Vijay won from two constituencies but then retained Perambur and resigned from Tiruchirappalli. So TVK's strength has fallen from 108 to 107 MLAs.
With Congress’ five legislators and other alliance partners, the government has the backing of around 120 MLAs, according to figures provided.
If Congress withdraws its support, the government's effective support could fall to around 115 MLAs.
That would put the government below the 118-seat majority threshold. If a confidence vote were to take place under such circumstances, the government could face a serious survival challenge.
VCK’s position could become critical
The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) could become particularly important now if the alliance between TVK and Congress breaks down.
VCK was a member of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance before the Assembly election. Although the party is still supporting the TVK government, it has also been reported that Thol. Thirumavalavan has already said VCK does not plan to break down the alliance with DMK.
The party supported TVK as it is a way to respect the electoral mandate and prevent the imposition of President's Rule in the state.
That means VCK's support for the TVK government may not necessarily translate into a permanent political realignment.
If Congress drops its support, VCK’s position will be crucial in determining if the government will survive.
A very delicate political balancing act
The current dispute is a reflection of the dilemma TVK and Congress are in.
TVK's national ambitions for Vijay may also help the party to grow beyond Tamil Nadu to become a dominant force in national politics. But Vijay's presence as a possible prime ministerial candidate would be a cause of friction with alliance partners who have their own local leadership ambitions.
Rahul Gandhi's positioning as a potential national leader for Congress remains strategically important. As such, the party may not want to go along with the alliance in which another regional leader is projected as leader in the opposition in the Lok Sabha elections of 2029.
The disagreement is a political flashpoint, not a final decision to end the alliance. But if the differences on the 2029 leadership question deepen and Congress ultimately withdraws support, the TVK government could have a very serious numerical challenge in the Assembly.
The coming months could therefore be critical for the alliance, and negotiations and political messaging will decide whether TVK and Congress can survive or if the tension over national leadership could become a threat to the stability of the government.
