Tamil Nadu Weather Update: IMD Yellow Alert Issued for Coastal Districts; Heavy Rain Forecast for Chennai Today

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Alert for several districts in Tamil Nadu for today, Friday, December 5th, 2025. This alert signals the potential for heavy to very heavy rainfall across the coastal regions, which are still recovering from the effects of previous intense weather systems.

The current weather pattern is influenced by the lingering moisture and instability over the Bay of Bengal, continuing the active Northeast Monsoon spell over the state.

Districts Under Yellow Alert Today (December 5th)

The Yellow Alert has been specifically issued for districts where the possibility of localized heavy downpours leading to waterlogging and localized flooding is significant.

The primary districts under the Yellow Alert include:

  • Chennai
  • Tiruvallur
  • Chengalpattu
  • Kancheepuram
  • Villupuram
  • Cuddalore
  • Delta Districts (Tanjore, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai)

Residents in these areas are advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions, as heavy rainfall could lead to traffic disruptions, water accumulation in low-lying areas, and temporary power outages.

Chennai Rain Forecast: Heavy Showers Expected

The forecast for Chennai and its suburbs indicates a strong likelihood of heavy rain today. The city has already witnessed intermittent showers over the past week, and the current IMD advisory suggests that these intense bursts of rain are set to continue.

The sky is expected to remain generally cloudy, with moderate rainfall predicted in most areas. However, some localities may experience intense spells of heavy to very heavy rain during the day and night. Civic bodies have been put on alert to manage waterlogging and ensure the quick draining of rainwater.

Fishermen and Coastal Residents Advisory

The IMD has also issued an advisory for fishermen, urging them not to venture into the sea along the Tamil Nadu coast and the adjoining southwest Bay of Bengal, as rough sea conditions and strong winds are anticipated.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation. While schools and colleges in most districts (including Chennai) are generally expected to reopen today after previous rain holidays, any sudden changes in the weather may prompt local District Collectors to issue fresh advisories or declare localized holidays.
