Punjab minister and Congress leader Vijay Inder Singla has played down speculation about a possible change of state Congress leadership as he says he is a "loyal soldier" of the party and will carry out whatever responsibilities are given to him. His comments come as the Congress high command is preparing to replace Amarinder Singh Raja Warring as Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
When asked if he would become the next Punjab Congress president, Singla said there was no such issue to his knowledge. He stressed that Raja Warring is still the state party president and that Congress leaders and workers are working under his leadership.
"I am a loyal soldier of the party," Singla said to reporters. And he added that whenever the Congress had assigned him a responsibility, he had fulfilled it and would continue working for the organisation in the same way.
Singla Says No Such Issue To His Knowledge
Singla’s comment was at a time when there has been talk about a leadership change in Punjab Congress. The party high command has come up with its decision to replace Warring, who has offered to resign, according to reports. Many names are being discussed as possible successors with Singla being one of the most promising candidates.
But Singla himself did not confirm that he was being considered for the position. He said he had responsibilities in the party and was focused on organisational work.
The Congress leader also spoke about his work in Sangrur, his home district. He described the area as a stronghold of the Aam Aadmi Party and said he was working there with Congress workers and leaders.

Raja Warring Leadership Change Under Discussion.
The speculation follows reports of an imminent change at the top of the Punjab Congress unit. Warring has refused to comment directly on reports surrounding his position, saying that some matters are internal to the party and that he would speak when the time was right.
News outlets have said Warring has resigned following talks with the Congress high command. The developments come less than six months before the elections of 2027 Punjab Assembly, and bring attention to the party’s organisational preparations.
The leadership review also followed the appointment of Sachin Pilot as the Congress general secretary in charge of Punjab, replacing Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel. Pilot has spoken to leaders and office-bearers as part of the organisational review ahead of elections.
Several Names In Contention
While Singla is being widely reported as the front-runner, several other senior Congress leaders are also being mentioned as potential candidates for the Punjab Congress chief's post, including Pargat Singh, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria and former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi.
The Congress has not yet made an official announcement on the appointment of a new Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee president as of this time. So Singla's reported status as a frontrunner remains part of media and political speculation rather than a confirmed appointment.
Congress faces internal differences in Punjab.
The leadership discussion takes place in an environment of reported discord in the Punjab Congress. Different factions have been trying to gain more influence in the state organisation and make their presence felt ahead of the next Assembly election.
Warring has been criticized in the past by some of the party for its election performance. In August, he defended his performance and questioned if he could be held responsible for the Congress’s fall from 80 Assembly seats in 2017 to 18 seats in the 2022 Punjab election.
There have also been public displays of support for Charanjit Singh Channi as his supporters advocated that he be projected as the Congress's chief ministerial face for the 2027 election. Warring had tried to soothe one of these crises by inviting a supporter onto the stage and offering to connect him with Channi.
Singla remains focused on party work
For now, Singla has maintained that he is focused on the responsibilities of the Congress. He said he will keep working with party leaders and workers if there is an organisational change regardless of what happens in the organisation.
His comments are in contrast to reports that identified him among the top contenders for the Punjab Congress chief post. The final decision has still to be made by the Congress leadership; no formal announcement of Singla as the successor had been made in the reports available on October 1, 2026.
With the 2027 Assembly election approaching, any change in the state Congress leadership is likely to have organisational consequences for the party. Until the Congress formally announces its decision, Singla's statement that he is a “loyal soldier” and that there is no such issue known to him remains his public position on the speculation.
