Chennai, Tamil Nadu: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay met school students in Chennai after launching the expansion of the rechristened Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Free Breakfast Scheme at the Government Middle School in Gandhi Gramam, Thiruvanmiyur.
The programme is a further expansion of the state's school breakfast programme and the government wants to provide nutritional support to students who are attending government schools.
Vijay met students in the school and conducted the breakfast programme. The interaction was an opportunity for the Chief Minister to speak directly with children who are part of the intended beneficiaries of the programme. School nutrition programmes are intended to provide students with healthy meals and also to support overall school attendance and participation.
The new name Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Free Breakfast Scheme is now seen as part of Tamil Nadu’s welfare and education activities. Initiating the programme, the state government will have free breakfast at schools and will improve the support available to children before the start of the day.
Breakfast is a must-eat meal for school-going children as sufficient nutrition can help in energy and concentration in classroom hours. Government-supported meal programmes can also help families in reducing the cost of food for children, which would normally be paid for in the form of shopping at the market every day for school breakfast programs.
At the Government Middle School in Gandhi Gramam, the Chief Minister met students and made it clear that welfare initiatives are aimed at the school level. This kind of programme requires schools, local administrative authorities, food suppliers and staff to work together so that meals are prepared and distributed according to the standards in place.
The expansion also brings into focus the link between nutrition and education. Government schools have students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, and the provision of meals is part of the wider effort to enhance access to education. Nutritional support is a crucial issue for governments when designing programmes to improve school education: infrastructure, teaching quality and attendance are all aspects of this.
The rechristening of the scheme after Perunthalaivar Kamarajar also connects the initiative to Tamil Nadu’s long-standing association with welfare measures related to education and school access. Kamarajar, who served as Chief Minister of the erstwhile Madras State, is well known for his attempts to improve education and school infrastructure in the state.
In this respect, the latest expansion is significant not only because it is a continuation of a meal programme but also for the state as a whole in terms of supporting kids in government schools. There will be the extent to which the expanded programme is implemented by the government and how it will work for the students at the institutions that are engaged in the programme.
Parental support on school mornings for families with tight schedules or household budgets is a lot better for them to have a free breakfast. For schools, a structured breakfast programme can also be part of the daily routine, and it will take coordination to ensure that students receive meals on time.

Vijay’s interaction with students following the launch has drawn attention to the implementation of the expanded scheme in Chennai. More details on the number of schools and students covered, the scale of the expansion and the operational arrangements will give us a better sense of the programme’s reach as implementation progresses.
The Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Free Breakfast Scheme is expanding as Tamil Nadu is working aggressively in the area of education-related programmes and welfare. We expect that the programme will continue to be at the heart of the state’s efforts to provide additional support to students who are in government schools and to encourage regular education.
