“Where Is Your Father?”: Vijay’s Assembly Jibe Sparks DMK Buzz Over MK Stalin’s Political Comeback

Tamil Nadu politics is again abuzz with Chief Minister Vijay’s pointed “Where is your father?” comment in Assembly that triggered a fresh round of political debate and speculation. What appeared to be a sharp political jab at Leader of Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin has now seen a bigger discussion about the possibility of former Chief Minister MK Stalin coming back to the legislative arena through Assembly by-elections in coming months.

At the time the comment is very significant because MK Stalin, who belonged to DMK in the 2026 Assembly elections, had suffered an unexpected defeat in his Kolathur stronghold to the TVK. Since then he has not been in the Assembly while his son Udhayanidhi Stalin has become Leader of the Opposition. Vijay’s comments are therefore seen as a direct reference to Stalin’s absence from the House and the changing political scenario in Tamil Nadu.

Responding to the growing discussion, MK Stalin countered the mounting debate, demonstrating his political influence despite his electoral defeat by saying that his connection with the people is more powerful than any government position. “I am in people’s hearts. I am not in the Assembly, but I am there wherever people look for me,” Stalin said. DMK supporters still see him as the party’s central figure, and it’s a statement that resonates with them.

Moreover, as the speculation grew, senior DMK leader and MLA KN Nehru voiced that Stalin’s return may not be far away. Nehru, in a speech at a public gathering, said the former Chief Minister would “come back soon” and take responsibility again. His comments are widely seen as the strongest indication that powerful sections of DMK are indeed pushing for Stalin to contest one of the by-elections expected in the coming months and re-enter the Assembly.

The controversy has also exposed the increasingly personal nature of political exchanges in the state. Opposition parties and even some of Vijay’s allies (VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan, among them) were quick to criticize Vijay’s comment, but Udhayanidhi Stalin’s reaction on social media also caused a backlash. It was a post that many people said was indirectly a reference to Vijay’s personal life and has been criticized by observers who said political disputes should not descend into personal attacks.

The timing of the debate is of course very important because six assembly seats are currently vacant and waiting for by-elections. One vacancy was created after Vijay resigned from Tiruchy East constituency while retaining Perambur, but five others were created after AIADMK legislators resigned and joined the TVK. These by-polls will be the first major political test since the Assembly elections and could change the picture of the TVK government and DMK at the same time.

The upcoming by-elections, for the DMK, are not just a prospect of political return for MK Stalin to the Assembly but they could become the way to bring him back to power. The former Chief Minister has not yet formally announced that he will run again, but party leaders and cadres are in a position to convince him to re-enter the arena, and in what may be one of the state’s most closely watched political contests, he will be on the front page of the news now.
