Naga, a convict residing in Belagavi prison since July 2024, was released when a bail plea was granted, the court said. Wilson Garden Naga had also been remanded to Hindalga Jail after the identity of actor Darshan appeared due to scrutiny from society and security alerts that had been issued under increasing scrutiny.

The shocking image, which went viral at the time, shows this pair of figures, Darshan and Naga, together in jail, apparently drinking tea and smoking tobacco. It got a ripple throughout Karnataka. It also led to serious worries of issues surrounding prison management, inmate rights and security holes inside the jail.

After police officers reported the incident, they were reportedly limiting use and putting in internal efforts to investigate how interactions at and photographs of such a photo could have occurred in a high-security wing inside the jail, they said.

Viral photos of those people have attracted widespread public condemnation since it was not merely that Darshan himself was embroiled in legal arguments at the time. Wilson Garden Naga was arrested for the murder of Mahesh, who was born in Siddapura and had been in prison for months while being investigated and pursued by government authorities.

A wealthy and notorious rowdy-sheeter with a checkered record, Naga's name was much discussed with regard to crime-related activity in Bengaluru and elsewhere in Karnataka.

Naga has also had health problems with health complications in the past several weeks and is currently being treated at Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences (BIMS) Hospital, the sources said. He had been in medical treatment for nearly a week before his official release, the report said.

His condition had been closely monitored by officials because of chronic health problems. Wilson Garden Naga's release will focus more on leading criminal cases and prison administration in Karnataka, and speculation on high-profile criminal cases and prison management is back.

And yes, the viral case that went off the charts back then and continues to haunt the public image, and the new release of Mr Naga has resurrected a conversation about the kind of power and reach from these incarcerated people within correction centres that has implications for their prison environment, for influence, and what it means to enter into a network. Officials will also keep an eye on him after leaving prison.

So far, the police have neither released a detailed statement as to the conditionality of his bail nor any terms on future court appearances in the murder case. As many suspects were in attendance, the Mahesh murder case was already an eye-catcher on the national news media, and links to the underworld were tied to the probe into the case, which was already a topic for local news outlets in Karnataka.

Wilson Garden Naga was released on bail and is now on his brief rehabilitation, but the trial in the ongoing case is likely to take more time than this. The development has generated a mixed reception across social media: Some users discuss the legality of this, and others return to an earlier tussle over viral prison photos, while others just keep coming back for more.

Given the sensitivity and public opinion aroused by such cases, officials are liable to be careful in both the investigation as well of court procedure ahead.
