Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from international cricket after a thrilling 14-year career with the national side. The ‘Big Show’ entertained cricket fans with his explosive batting, innovative shots and ability to change matches in a few overs.
The 38 year old announced his decision on November 2, 2026 through an episode of The Final Word podcast. He has retired from international cricket but will continue playing franchise T20 cricket (including for Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League).
Fans will remember him for what he did for Australian cricket, so here are five of his greatest international innings.
1. 201 Not Out Against Afghanistan – 2023 ODI World Cup
Maxwell’s unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium is one of the greatest innings in ODI history.
Australia were struggling at 91/7 chasing 292 runs. Maxwell made an extraordinary recovery with 201 not out from 128 balls (21 fours, 10 sixes).
He had cramps and couldn’t move but he batted on and led Australia to a three wicket victory with Pat Cummins.
The innings made him the first Australian man to score an ODI double century.
2. 145 Not Out Against Sri Lanka – 2016 T20I
Maxwell had another unforgettable performance against Sri Lanka in Pallekele in September 2016.
Opening the batting he scored an unbeaten 145 from 65 deliveries (14 fours, nine sixes).
His knock helped Australia post 263/3 which was a record T20I total at the time. Australia went on to win by 85 runs in the end.
The performance showed Maxwell could dominate bowling attacks from the start of an innings.
3. 113 Not Out Against India – 2019 T20I
Indian cricket fans will also remember Maxwell’s brilliant show in Bengaluru at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in February 2019.
India made 190/4 and Australia were set a difficult target of 191. Australia were under pressure at 22/2 when Maxwell took control of the chase.
He made 113 not out from 55 balls (nine sixes, seven fours). Australia won by seven wickets with two balls to go and took the T20I series.
4. 106 Against Netherlands – 2023 ODI World Cup
Maxwell once again showed his extraordinary hitting ability in the 2023 ODI World Cup match against Netherlands in Delhi.
He scored 106 runs off just 44 balls — his century came in only 40 balls. It was the fastest century ever recorded in men’s ODI World Cup history at that time.
Australia won big after scoring 399/8.
5. 104 Against India – 2017 Test Match
Maxwell also showed his ability in the longest format of the game.
In the third Test against India in Ranchi in March 2017 he scored 104 runs from 185 balls.
His century was part of a big partnership with Steve Smith and Australia made 451 in their first innings. The match ended as a draw.
A Remarkable Career Comes to an End
Maxwell played seven Tests, 149 ODIs and 130 T20Is for Australia. He scored 7,000+ international runs (10 international centuries), took 136 wickets (136 scalps).
He was also a part of Australia's 2015 and 2023 ODI World Cup winning teams as well as the 2021 T20 World Cup winning squad.
Maxwell may not be wearing Australia’s colours anymore but his performances will live long in the memory of cricket fans around the world.
His international retirement is the end of a special chapter but fans will still get to watch the Big Show in franchise cricket.
