Malaysia’s Asian Games campaign at the 2026 Asian Games came to an end when rain forced the cancellation of their men’s cricket quarter-final against Bangladesh in Nisshin. Because Bangladesh had higher seeding, the match was canceled so the two sides were not due to play until two hours before the scheduled toss, and Bangladesh made it into the semis.
The washout was particularly disappointing for Malaysia, which had hoped to make the most of their chance to play a Test-playing nation. But the weather brought their Asian Games run to an end without the team being able to participate in the knockout match.

The cancellation was one of several rain-related disruptions to the men's cricket competition at the Asian Games. The weather affected four matches during the tournament, and the weather in Nisshin was bad enough that the Malaysia-Bangladesh quarterfinal was unable to take place.
With no play possible, tournament rules meant Bangladesh had to go on to the semifinals because of its superior seeding. The decision gave Bangladesh a place in the semifinals, where it will face Pakistan.
Sri Lanka also secured a semifinal berth after its quarter-final against Nepal was cancelled earlier on Tuesday. Sri Lanka will now meet India in the other semifinal as the tournament moves towards the medal matches.

The result means Malaysia once again went to the quarterfinals but cannot progress any further. The team has made it to the knockout stage four times since cricket was introduced at the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games but did not make it beyond the quarterfinals.
The washout was thus another frustrating moment for Malaysia's cricket team. Unlike in a typical defeat, there was no opportunity for the players to test themselves against Bangladesh or influence the outcome on the field.
For Virandeep and his teammates, disappointment was compounded by the very limited opportunity to meet full-member international teams. These are the common challenges associated with associate cricket where teams can have fewer chances to play against established Test nations in the big leagues.
Bangladesh, on the other hand, is still in the running for another Asian Games medal. In the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, the team won bronze when it beat Pakistan in the third-place playoff. Bangladesh had already won bronze in 2014, but its biggest success in 2010 was when in the final it beat Afghanistan to win the gold medal.
India will keep its gold medal defense.
India is among the teams in Aichi-Nagoya representing the men's cricket gold medal. When the Indian men won gold at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, they will now try to defend their title.
India’s path to the semifinals was also affected by the weather. In its final match against Afghanistan, the match was cancelled, and India was the higher-ranked team as the tournament follows its rules.
The Indian women's cricket team has already defended its Asian Games title in the 2026 edition. Harmanpreet Kaur’s team defeated Sri Lanka by 147 runs in the final to win another gold medal.
The men's action now gets to the final stage with India scheduled to face Sri Lanka and Bangladesh against Pakistan. The winners go to the gold-medal match and the losers compete for bronze.
Weather Could Still Play A Role.
Although the weather caused significant disruption during the quarterfinal stage, conditions in Nisshin are expected to be more favorable for the semifinals and medal matches. The semifinals will take place on Thursday while the medal matches will take place on Saturday, October 3.
But for Malaysia, the weather has already brought its Asian Games campaign to a premature end. The team leaves the tournament without having played its quarter-final against Bangladesh.
