Tanzid Hasan Tamim’s Test century against Australia was the first Bangladeshi batsman to score a Test century in Australia, and Bangladesh’s cricket team’s first century on Australian soil has been a proud achievement.
Tanzid reached the century mark on the second day of the first Test between Australia and Bangladesh at Marrara Cricket Ground. He got his hundred from 187 deliveries and showed patience and composure against a strong Australian bowling attack.
The 25-year-old left-hander finished with 101 runs from 197 balls, including eight fours and one six. Nathan Lyon dismissed him after the opener had played a key role in putting Bangladesh in a commanding position.
A Historic Moment for Bangladesh
Tanzid’s century is significant because it was his first in Test cricket but also because of the venue. No Bangladeshi batter had previously scored a Test hundred in Australia. And so his achievement adds a special chapter to Bangladesh’s cricketing history.
His innings also came during a team performance that was so impressive. Bangladesh entered the Test after Australia were bowled out for a mere 198 runs in the first innings. Hasan Mahmud was the star with 6/55 and helped Bangladesh take control early in the match.
Tanzid then provided the stability Bangladesh needed with the bat. He showed remarkable discipline against Australia’s pace attack before steadily increasing the scoring rate as his innings progressed.
From Maiden Fifty to Historic Hundred
Tanzid came into the match with limited experience in Test cricket, so his performance was even more remarkable. His first Test fifty occurred in the same innings and he turned it into a century.
The century also came after Bangladesh had gone 23 years without playing a Test in Australia, making the performance particularly significant for the visitors.
Tanzid was finally dismissed for 101, but his contribution helped Bangladesh to set a good first-innings position. His innings showed the patience and temperament to thrive in challenging overseas Test conditions.
