IRCTC Waitlist: 5 Ways To Improve Your Chances Of Getting A Confirmed Train Seat

The train ticket in India’s busy festive season is difficult to obtain, especially on the many major cities connecting to smaller towns. With the increase in festivals and holidays, people become stuck with waitlisted tickets, sometimes with numbers running into the hundreds.

A high waiting list number does not necessarily mean that there is no chance to get a seat. Ticket cancellations, additional coaches, passenger plans, and railway capacity adjustments can affect the status before the reservation chart is prepared.

There are also official options for travel at the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) that travelers can use to be able to travel on a confirmed ticket.

Opt for IRCTC's VIKALP scheme

The VIKALP scheme is also known as the Alternate Train Accommodation Scheme for waitlisted passengers.

Under VIKALP, passengers are able to choose alternate trains when booking their ticket. If the original ticket remains fully waitlisted after chart preparation, eligible passengers can be granted accommodation on one of the selected alternate trains where seats are available.

The IRCTC user guide allows passengers to choose alternate trains and dates that are around their original trip. Seating is assigned according to availability.

One big catch, however, is that VIKALP does not guarantee a confirmed berth. IRCTC clearly states that the transfer depends on availability in the alternate train.

Passengers can choose up to seven alternate trains under the scheme. The alternate train can also leave from or arrive at a nearby cluster station instead of exactly the stations mentioned on the original booking.

So passengers should be careful to look into the alternate train details before they make a selection.

Look For Different Trains On The Same Route

If you have your preferred train with a very long waiting list, do not only search for one service.

Check other trains between the same or nearby stations. A less popular departure time, a different train type or a slightly different boarding station may provide better availability.

And look at trains leaving one day earlier or later if your travel plans are flexible; for example, rather than just the Friday evening train, investigate the morning and afternoon departures of the train.

This is most important in the festive season when demand is greatest for certain dates and departure times.

Passengers can also check nearby boarding stations and destinations where practical. A station a short distance away may have a different availability position.

Check Multiple Classes Before Giving Up

Another way to check availability is in different classes.

A passenger who first searches for a sleeper-class ticket could also check AC 3-tier, AC 2-tier or other classes depending on their budget and travel needs.

Availability can differ greatly between classes. A train with a long waiting list in one class might have better availability in another.

Passengers need to recognize that the choice of class changes the fare and travel conditions, and therefore the choice should be made based on availability and personal needs.

The Indian Railways also has an upgradation scheme under which waitlisted passengers in lower classes can sometimes be placed in a higher class if vacant accommodation is available. VIKALP and class upgradation are among the measures taken to address waitlisted demand by the Railway Ministry.

Keep Checking Your PNR Status

A waitlisted ticket can change status as the journey date approaches. That is why passengers should keep checking their PNR rather than assuming that the original waiting-list number will remain unchanged.

Cancellations by other passengers can also lead to movement in the waiting list. Railways can also add coaches, operate special trains, or increase the capacity of existing services if operationally feasible.

The Railway Ministry said waiting lists are regularly monitored, and measures such as additional trains, additional coaches, and increased frequency may be taken to address demand.

IRCTC also advises passengers who have opted for VIKALP to check their PNR status after chart preparation.

Be Careful With A Fully Waitlisted E-Ticket

One of the most important things passengers should know is that a fully waitlisted e-ticket cannot be used to board the reserved coach if it remains fully waitlisted after chart preparation.

The IRCTC ticketing guidelines state that fully waitlisted e-tickets are dropped from the reservation chart after chart preparation, and passengers are not allowed to board the train on that ticket. The booking amount is refunded according to the applicable rules.

This is different from a ticket that becomes RAC or partially confirmed. Passengers should therefore check their final PNR status before traveling.

If a passenger has been shifted to an alternate train through VIKALP, they should also check the updated PNR and journey details before reaching the station.

Consider Changing Your Travel Date

Changing the journey date can occasionally have a big impact if your travel arrangements are flexible.

Festive travel demand is frequently concentrated on specific days, notably just before and after large festivities. There may be more availability if you travel one day earlier or later.

In a similar vein, selecting an off-peak departure time rather than a well-liked evening train may increase the likelihood of locating lodging.

Passengers should also consider booking their return journey separately rather than assuming that availability will be similar in both directions.

Don't Rely On Unofficial Booking Claims

During the festive season, social media is awash with claims of secret booking procedures, guaranteed confirmation methods, and ways to evade train systems.

When it comes to such promises, travellers should exercise caution. When there are no available accommodations, there is no real trick that can provide a confirmed berth.

The safest approach is to use official IRCTC facilities, check multiple trains and dates, opt for VIKALP when appropriate, and monitor the PNR until chart preparation.

The alternate route can help confirm the alternate route.

With festive-season demand continuing to put pressure on railway reservations, planning flexibility remains one of the most essential tools for passengers. ultimately, a ticket will have a ticket will have a ticket will have a ticket will have a ticket that will have a backup plan that will have a backup plan that may have a backup plan that may have a backup plan that will ultimately have a backup plan that is going on a backup plan.
