Indian travellers planning a holiday to Thailand will keep their visa-free entry, but the stay is about to change. From September 15, 2026, Indian ordinary passport holders travelling to Thailand for tourism will be allowed to stay for a maximum of 30 days without a visa. This is in contrast to the previous 60-day visa-free stay.
The change is part of Thailand's revised visa exemption rules, which were published in the Royal Gazette on August 31. India is still on the list of countries that can get a 30-day tourist visa exemption. The new rules will affect travellers from several other countries.
For Indians planning a Thailand holiday after September 15, the point is simple: you do not need to apply for a tourist visa for a stay of up to 30 days, but you still need to meet Thailand’s entry requirements.
What Indian Travellers Need To Carry
A valid passport is one of the most critical issues. Travelers should have a passport valid for at least six months from the date of arrival in Thailand.
Travellers should also carry a confirmed return or onward ticket. Immigration authorities might want to see evidence that the visitor intends to leave Thailand within the permitted period.
A confirmed hotel booking or accommodation details need to be recorded. Travelers need to keep all booking confirmations and a basic itinerary with a basic travel plan. This kind of document can make immigration more convenient for immigration.
Another thing that tourists should pay attention to is proof of sufficient funds. Travelers under the tourist visa exemption rules must bring 20,000 Thai Baht (around Rs 58,000) per person in cash, which is approximately Rs 58,000 depending on the exchange rate.
Thailand has also made the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) an important part of the entry process. Travellers arriving by air, land or sea need to complete the digital form before arrival. The TDAC can be submitted within 72 hours before entering Thailand.

What changes from September 15?
The biggest change is the reduction of visa-free stay from 60 days to 30 days. Travellers who enter Thailand before September 15 will continue with the rules applicable to their date of entry, while those entering from September 15 will fall under the new 30-day exemption.
The revised system also removes India's previous Visa on Arrival eligibility as India would now be covered by the 30-day visa exemption scheme. Thailand's government said the changes are meant to simplify overlapping visa privileges while also boosting security and monitoring of foreign visitors.
If travellers want to stay beyond 30 days, a suitable visa or extension may be necessary. Thailand's official guidance says the 30-day exemption can be extended for another period of up to 30 days, subject to the immigration officer's discretion.
There is also a fundamental distinction between tourism and employment. The visa exemption is intended for certain travel purposes, for example, tourism. Travelers who are going to Thailand for employment or for another purpose that requires a visa should not use the visa-free facility as a substitute for the appropriate visa.
With the new rules in place for most Indian tourists, however, Thailand has not become difficult to visit. It is still visa-free for short tourist trips. The big change is that travellers will now have 30 days instead of 60, and the documentation and TDAC must also be completed.
