Gurugram has made a step towards cleaner and more sustainable public transportation with the first electric bus from a fleet of 100 having officially arrived in the city.
The initiative would boost urban mobility, reduce pollution and allow commuters to travel far more ecologically friendly in a modern environment. 25 electric buses will be delivered in August. The remaining buses will be delivered in stages.
The introduction of electric buses is part of the Haryana government’s plan to make green mobility the norm and reduce the dependency on diesel-powered public transport. Gurugram is one of the fastest growing cities in the National Capital Region (NCR) with a big increase in vehicle numbers and it has so far seen congestion and bad air quality. Electric buses will be a game changer for these problems.
The buses are equipped with modern passenger conveniences such as comfortable seats, CCTV surveillance, GPS tracking systems, panic buttons, digital display boards and facilities to make them more accessible to senior citizens and differently-abled passengers, the officials said.
The first bus is just the beginning of a plan to build an eco-friendly public transport network in Gurugram. Once 100 buses are operating, they will cover a large number of routes connecting residential areas, commercial hubs, metro stations, educational institutions, industrial zones and so on. Such more seamless connections may encourage more people to leave private vehicles behind for public transport.
Environmental and economic benefits are stated to be immense from electric buses. They do not produce any tailpipe emissions and hence can help reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. The buses are also quiet, so noise pollution is less in cities where it is heavily populated. In the long run low operating and maintenance costs can make public transport more efficient.
The first electric bus is being launched at a time when electric mobility in many cities in India is on the rise. Electric buses are more and more important to India’s clean transportation plan as a result of various state and central governments’ initiatives.

We expect authorities to conduct route planning, driver training and operational testing before bringing the buses on to route during normal services. Charging infrastructure is also being built to make sure the electric fleet works.
