Porsche has launched Cayenne Electric in India thus expanding its electric car line-up. The new SUV is the first fully electric vehicle to carry the Cayenne nameplate and is available in two versions to Indian buyers. Porsche Cayenne Electric is priced at Rs 1.76 crore and the Cayenne Turbo Electric Rs 2.25 crore. The prices are ex-showroom.

With the Cayenne Electric being launched, Porsche customers will have another powertrain option without going away with the traditional Cayenne. The petrol-powered SUV is still being sold alongside the electric version and customers can choose between an internal combustion engine and an all-electric setup as long as they are in the Cayenne family.

Porsche Cayenne Electric Price And Variants

The Porsche Cayenne Electric is available in two forms and the Turbo is at the top of the range. The standard model is priced at Rs 1.76 crore ex-showroom while the Cayenne Turbo Electric is priced at Rs 2.25 crore ex-showroom. Once insurance, registration and other fees are taken into account, the price on-road will be significantly higher and dependent on the location of the buyer.

The electric SUV then takes a premium position in the luxury EV space in India. It’s tailored to buyers who desire the performance and practicality of a huge luxury SUV and yet also an electric powertrain.

Performance Numbers

The Cayenne Electric has 402bhp and 835Nm of torque. Porsche claims that this version can accelerate from 0 to 100kmph in 4.8 seconds. The Cayenne Turbo Electric, by contrast, has 435bhp and 1,500Nm of torque and it can run 0-100kmph in just 2.8 seconds.

These figures place the Turbo Electric in the high-performance SUV category. The electric powertrain is fast enough for quick acceleration, and the arrival of torque is just instantaneous which leads to very high performance figures.

Both versions come with all-wheel drive as standard. Porsche also gives a temporary power boost of up to 130kW for a maximum of 10 seconds. The electric SUV also provides up to 600kW of regenerative braking power so that it recovers energy during deceleration and boosts its performance and efficiency.

Porsche Cayenne Electric Range And Charging

Range is the key aspect for buyers of a premium electric SUV. The standard Cayenne Electric has a claimed range of up to 642km, while the Turbo Electric has a claimed range of up to 623km.

The difference in range between the two versions is quite small despite their different performance characteristics. However, these figures are based on controlled testing conditions and should not be treated as a guaranteed distance in everyday driving. Driving style, road conditions, weather, traffic and frequent use of high-performance functions can affect actual range.

Charging capability will also be an important factor for Indian customers considering the electric Cayenne. Buyers will look at the charging infrastructure in and around home and workplaces and highways before choosing to switch from the petrol-powered luxury SUV to an electric one.

Larger Than The Petrol Cayenne

The Porsche Cayenne Electric is based on a dedicated electric vehicle platform and is larger than the petrol-powered Cayenne already in the market. That makes it the largest Cayenne body style Porsche is selling in India.

The SUV has several design elements that are Porsche's latest electric models. These include LED headlights, large 21-inch wheels and a full-width rear light bar with the Porsche crest in the centre. The design combines the familiar Cayenne silhouette with styling elements that distinguish Porsche's latest EV models.

Luxury Interior And Technology

Inside the cabin, the Cayenne Electric adopts Porsche’s new digital approach. The SUV has dual digital displays, customizable ambient lighting and a digital key that allows compatible smartphones to be used for vehicle access.

A multi-zone climate control system is also part of the equipment package, adding to the comfort expected for a luxury SUV in this price category. Technology is combined with the performance-focused character of the Cayenne range of cars inside.

The introduction of the electric model does not mean Porsche is going to move away from the traditional Cayenne immediately. The company will offer electric and petrol versions as it is, therefore, much more flexible based on the needs of the customers and charging arrangements.

Porsche Cayenne Electric Vs Petrol Cayenne

The electric Cayenne comes at a substantial premium compared with the petrol-powered Cayenne model that starts at around Rs 1.51 crore in India. For customers who are interested in both versions of the Cayenne, many variables are at play other than the initial purchase price.

The electric model gives instant torque, quick acceleration and zero tailpipe emissions, while the petrol Cayenne might be more suitable for long-haul customers who need to be on the road for long periods of time and with limited charging infrastructure. Home charging access and daily driving habits will be important considerations.

With its combination of performance, luxury technology and a claimed range of more than 600km, the Porsche Cayenne Electric marks a significant new chapter for one of Porsche’s best-known SUV models. The model gives Indian luxury-car owners the chance to have the size and character of a Cayenne while driving an all-electric powertrain.
