Bengaluru will see a major political demonstration on Thursday (5 Nov) as the INDIA bloc parties plan to protest at Freedom Park against the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The opposition alliance will demand the resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar and cancellation of the voter-list revision process, saying it could deprive eligible people of voting rights.
KPCC president and MLC B.K. Hariprasad announced the demonstration at a joint press conference held here by INDIA bloc leaders at the KPCC office in Bengaluru. He said the protest would bring together several opposition parties to voice their concerns over the electoral revision process and what they term as threats to democratic institutions.
The demonstration is being held at Freedom Park, which is one of the busiest political rally and public protest venues in Bengaluru. Leaders of Congress, CPI (Communist Party of India), Communist Party of India (Marxist), Samajwadi Party and other INDIA bloc constituents are expected to participate.
Three Major Demands of the INDIA Bloc
The opposition alliance has spelled out three demands ahead of the November 5 demonstration.
The first demand is the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Opposition leaders have questioned the functioning of the Election Commission and alleged that the electoral revision process has raised serious questions about the protection of voters’ rights.
The second demand is cancellation of the Special Intensive Revision exercise. INDIA has said that the process should not go on in its present form as it could lead to ineligible voters being left out of electoral rolls.
The third demand is the reinstatement of names of eligible voters allegedly removed from electoral lists. The opposition parties have demanded corrective action so that citizens who are entitled to vote are not left out of the electoral process.
The alliance says these demands are part of a wider campaign to protect democratic participation and ensure that every eligible citizen has the right to vote.
Protest Follows INDIA Bloc Demonstration in Delhi
The Bengaluru demonstration is part of the INDIA bloc’s nationwide campaign against the SIR exercise and the functioning of the Election Commission.
The opposition alliance held a protest at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi on 1 November. Leaders of several opposition parties took part in the demonstration and raised demands regarding the electoral revision process and the resignation of the CEC.
Hariprasad said the November 5 event in Bengaluru would continue the campaign launched in the national capital. INDIA bloc leaders have also discussed taking agitation beyond major cities to district, taluk and block levels.
The alliance says wider public participation is needed to make its concerns about electoral rolls and voting rights known.
Congress and Left Parties to Join Demonstration
Several INDIA bloc constituents in Karnataka are expected to participate in the Freedom Park protest. Apart from Congress, CPI, CPI(M), Samajwadi Party, Forward Bloc and other opposition parties have also participated in discussions on the campaign.
CPI(M) state secretary K. Prakash has also mentioned that the alliance has demanded changes in the process of appointing the Chief Election Commissioner. The opposition has questioned the selection procedure and sought transparency.
The alliance has also questioned legal provisions about immunity for the Chief Election Commissioner. These issues will be part of the political discourse around the protest as well.

What Is the Special Intensive Revision of Electoral Rolls?
SIR (Special Intensive Revision) is an exercise of the Election Commission to review and update electoral rolls. These revisions are done so that voter lists are accurate, contain eligible citizens, and remove entries that may not be valid.
But opposition parties have questioned how the exercise is being carried out. They say that if verification is inadequate or procedural problems arise, then eligible voters could lose their place on electoral rolls.
The Election Commission maintains that revision of electoral rolls is part of maintaining accurate voter lists. Opposition objections and allegations of wrongful deletions are political claims and should not be confused with officially established findings.
Bengaluru Protest on November 5: What to Expect
With the INDIA bloc gearing up for a major demonstration at Freedom Park on November 5, the protest on November 5 is expected to be an important political event in Karnataka.
The demonstration will highlight opposition demands on the SIR exercise, the role of the CEC and the names of eligible voters. Bengaluru event has already inspired alliance leaders to take the campaign to districts and taluks in Karnataka too.
The protest will also see if opposition parties can coalesce around a common issue. So far, the INDIA bloc says its central message is protection of voting rights and democratic institutions.
