Karnataka SSLC Exam 2027: PEN and APAAR IDs Made Mandatory for Registration; Check Key Details

Students preparing for the SSLC Examination 2027 should be aware of the new registration requirements announced by the Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board (KSEAB). By October 20, students appearing for the SSLC Examination-1 need to apply for their 11-digit Permanent Education Number (PEN) and 12-digit Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry (APAAR) ID in the registration process.

The move is to strengthen the digital management of students' academic records and make mark cards available through DigiLocker. But education officials say students who do not yet have an APAAR ID can still register using their PEN number. Students and parents should therefore contact their schools and follow the latest instructions issued by KSEAB to confirm the requirements applicable to their registration.

PEN and APAAR IDs for Karnataka SSLC students

The Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board is working on the digital management of academic records and making the examination documents easier to access and share. The need to get students' PEN and APAAR identification numbers is connected with this.

According to Bangalore Mirror, KSEAB Chairperson Prakash GT Nittali said students are asked to enter their 11-digit PEN and 12-digit APAAR ID while registering for the 2027 SSLC Examination-1. The identification numbers should enable students' digital academic profiles to be linked to their exam results so that they can access and verify the educational documents at home.

A modernised examination system is one of the major objectives of the board with the introduction of digital mark cards. Digital records can also be used for students to obtain their mark cards and educational documents when they take admission into pre-university colleges and other educational institutions.

Education authorities can also leverage the link to digital records to avoid dealing with the problem of handling, preserving, and validating physical documents. Students should also note that the information they submit at registration should be accurate and that their identification documents are correctly recorded by their schools.

What is the PEN number?

PEN stands for Permanent Education Number. It is an 11-digit identification number assigned to a student to help education authorities maintain and track academic records. This number helps identify students at different stages of their schooling and helps schools manage educational information more effectively. It can also be useful when students change schools, as it helps maintain continuity in their academic records.

For students preparing for the Karnataka SSLC Examination 2027, checking the PEN number should be the first step in the registration process. Students who are not sure about their number should consult their school administration or class teacher.

Schools should also check that the identification number entered into the examination registration portal matches the student's records. Personal or academic errors should be reported and corrected through the prescribed process before the registration details are finalised.

What is APAAR ID, and what does it do for students?

APAAR stands for Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry. It is a 12-digit unique identification number introduced in the Central Government’s ‘One Nation, One Student ID’ initiative. The system is designed to help students maintain their academic achievements and educational documents in a digital format. These records may include mark sheets, certificates, academic credits, and other recognised educational accomplishments.

APAAR is connected to digital academic services for students, including DigiLocker, which enables students to access documents to be processed electronically. The system aims to facilitate verification and transfer of educational records when students move between institutions and when studying further. To avoid the need for physical documents in students’ files, students can utilise digital records anywhere they would like in the institution or authority.

For SSLC students, the introduction of APAAR with digital mark cards could make admissions after Class 10 easier. Student records of academic achievements might be easier to get and share when applying for Pre-University Course (PUC) admissions or other educational programmes. Digital systems may also reduce the risk of losing physical documents, so students will need to follow the instructions given when creating and using their marks cards.

Students Without APAAR IDs Should Contact Their Schools

The APAAR ID requirement led to confusion among students who have not yet received the identification numbers. Bangalore Mirror reported that students who do not have an APAAR ID could receive a physical marks card instead of a digital marks card through DigiLocker if they do not have an APAAR ID. TV9 Kannada also reported that SSLC registration should still be completed with the PEN number even if an APAAR ID has not been obtained.

Some students are having trouble getting an APAAR ID because their names, dates of birth, or other details don’t match the Aadhaar and school records. APAAR declares matching demographic information as a crucial factor for generating the ID. Students having problems with that should go to school authorities to check their records and are advised to correct them, the study says.

Until the board's instructions are confirmed for an individual case, students should not assume that the absence of an APAAR ID automatically disqualifies them from registering for the examination. They should ask their school to check the latest KSEAB circular or registration portal requirements and complete the process according to the official guidance.

SSLC Exam 2027 Registration Deadline and Important Instructions

KSEAB has opened online registration for SSLC Examination-1, 2027. According to reports on the registration schedule, schools must complete the process by November 11, 2026. The registration process covers eligible regular students, repeat candidates, and students with disabilities to comply with the board’s rules.

Schools need to enter the required student details through the designated portal, upload photographs and signatures in the prescribed format, and verify the information before submitting applications. Students need to check their names, dates of birth, and other details carefully. Any discrepancy should be brought to the school's attention as soon as possible to avoid last-minute problems.

Students and parents can visit the official Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board website at kseab.karnataka.gov.in. Schools may also refer to the board’s registration instructions and contact their technical support office at 080-23310075 if they are having problems with the registration portal.

SSLC candidates need to complete registration within the prescribed deadline and ensure their academic records are accurate. PEN and APAAR IDs are being integrated into Karnataka's digital examination system, but students who experience difficulty in obtaining an APAAR ID should seek clarification from their schools and follow the latest official instructions issued by KSEAB.
