Andhra Poll Chaos: Supreme Court Intervenes Over Nomination Violence

At present the nomination process for the urban local bodies election in Andhra Pradesh is halted due to the intense political conflicts and the Supreme Court’s intervention. The state’s political environment was also on the rise during the filing period when the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) and the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) vehemently accused each other of violence, intimidation and democratic obstruction.

The Violence and Obstruction.

The YSRCP alleged TDP supporters were involved in a systemic campaign of intimidation, physical violent attacks and preventing opposition candidates from entering nomination centers. Such disturbances were particularly prevalent in Nellore, Kadapa and Tirupati districts as well as tense towns like Punganur and Pulivendula, the YSRCP said. The YSRCP specifically made a complaint about the tearing of nomination papers that had a severe impact on both women candidates and even an Assistant Returning Officer. The opposition said the ruling alliance imposed force to ensure uncontested wins by putting up a wall of local resistance. Midhun Reddy was attacked with stones and sticks in Punganur when he was accompanying the candidates, and the YSRCP decided to not conduct elections in that municipality due to the lack of security. The TDP countered the charges that it was the YSRCP cadres who initiated the chaos and resorted to confrontational tactics as there was no support on the ground. The TDP leaders also said more than 22,800 nominations had been successfully registered across the state. Both political parties have voiced their commitment to peaceful and transparent elections but the ground reality was far from the same.

Supreme Court Interventions and Deferrals.

Given more than 70 incidents of poll violence, the Supreme Court of India intervened on Wednesday, October 21, 2026. The Supreme Court declared that the YSRCP founded a prima facie case regarding the breakdown of order at nomination venues. Since courts can’t be left to be powerless in the face of electoral injustice, the Supreme Court ordered the Andhra Pradesh State Election Commission (APSEC) to:

1. Review all formal complaints, applications and electronic/video evidence of candidates by October 22.

2. Delay publication of the final candidate list until October 25, 2026.

3. Provide a local and further 48-hour window for nominations where the commission confirms that genuine law and order barriers prevented candidates from participating.

Current Status of the Polls

The state election commissioner Anil Chandra Punetha came up with a clear and immediate mandate to halt all electoral activities for 100 urban local bodies (13 municipal corporations and 87 municipalities/Nagar Panchayats) following the top court's directives. The commission has also said that the total nomination deadline will not be extended statewide but localized changes will be made based on district collector reports and CCTV images. Any election officials found to be biased will be disciplined. The Supreme Court has scheduled its next formal hearing for October 27, 2026.
