Lorry Plunges 100 Feet Into Gorge Near Kotagiri After Failing to Withstand Heavy Load; Major Accident Averted

A parked lorry fell into a nearly 100-foot-deep gorge near Kattapetti in Kotagiri after reportedly failing to bear the weight of its heavy load. It was parked along roadside at night, and people were worried when it happened, said police.

Luckily, no one was inside the lorry at the time of the accident, so nobody was injured, and there was no tragedy.

The lorry had been left parked along the roadside near Kattapetti. During night time it slipped under load of its heavy luggage and rolled down the steep roadside slope before plunging into deep gorge.

The incident illustrates how dangerous it can be to park heavy-loaded commercial vehicles along the road (hillsides are steep and roads narrow). Accidents happen more often in hilly areas where such conditions exist.

Heavy Lorry Rolls Into 100-Foot Gorge

The accident took place near Kattapetti, close to Kotagiri hill town in Tamil Nadu’s Nilgiris district. The lorry was reportedly parked on the roadside when it suddenly started moving and fell into the gorge.

The vehicle’s heavy load is suspected to have caused the accident. But no further details about what actually happened (whether the vehicle’s parking system failed or the roadside surface gave way) are given.

If the driver or someone else in the vehicle was inside when it fell from that height, there could have been serious consequences. At the time, no one was inside, so luckily!

No Casualties Reported

One of the most important things about this incident was that the lorry was empty when it plunged into the gorge. Since the driver wasn’t inside, no one died or got injured.

Had the vehicle been occupied or other road users present when it fell, it could have turned into a major tragedy. The incident has also brought to light once again how important safe parking practices are for heavy vehicles.

Safety Concerns on Hill Roads

Hill roads in the Nilgiris have steep gradients, sharp bends and narrow stretches of roadside. Heavy vehicles should be parked with extra care on these roads (at night and on sloped surfaces).

Drivers of loaded trucks and lorries need to park on level ground and secure their vehicles properly (parking and wheel-locking) so that they cannot roll away. Where possible, designated parking areas should be used.

Heavy vehicles carrying heavy loads may become unstable if they are parked on uneven or sloped ground. A small movement can cause a serious accident when the roadside is close to a deep valley or gorge.

Further Details Awaited

The incident near Kattapetti reminds us how dangerous roadside parking in mountainous terrain can be. The lorry fell, but because nobody was inside it, injuries/deaths were avoided.

More details about the damage to the lorry, the recovery operation, and exactly what happened before the accident may emerge as more information is released.

For now, the incident is a lucky escape from what could have been a devastating accident on hill roads near Kotagiri.
