‘Breaking Bad’ to ‘Prison Break’: MK Stalin Takes Fresh Swipe at TVK Government

DMK president M.K Stalin has intensified his criticism of Tamil Nadu’s ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government, comparing recent incidents involving a major drug seizure and a prison escape to the popular television series Breaking Bad and Prison Break.

Stalin gave the latest comments on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, after 17 undertrial inmates escaped from Thekkampatti sub-jail in Theni district. He questioned the state government’s handling of law and order and raised concerns about prison security.

In a post on X, Stalin said: “Following Breaking Bad, Prison Break has now begun in Tamil Nadu too!” His comments followed an earlier attack on the TVK government over a drug-related case.

Why Stalin referred to ‘Prison Break’?

The latest political controversy came on the heels of 17 inmates escaping from Thekkampatti sub-jail late on Monday night, October 26.

According to initial reports, the inmates used a staged medical emergency to get prison staff to open their cell. They then attacked a guard and escaped through the prison’s main entrance.

There were three prison employees injured, including a guard who suffered a head injury. Police search teams were called in and special teams were formed to trace the escapees.

According to reports published on October 27, four of the 17 inmates had been recaptured, while 13 remained at large at the time of reporting.

Stalin asked how such a large number of prisoners could escape despite security arrangements and surveillance systems. He also referred to the earlier escape of two prisoners from Puzhal prison, arguing that the incidents raised questions about prison security across the state.

‘Breaking Bad’ Remark Followed Major Drug Seizure.

Stalin’s earlier reference to Breaking Bad came on October 17, after the arrest of a TVK functionary following a major methamphetamine seizure in Nagapattinam district.

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) arrested the functionary after about 135 kg of methamphetamine was recovered in the case. The substance was suspected to be connected to a network used to smuggle drugs to Sri Lanka.

Stalin described TVK as a “Breaking Bad Party” and compared it with the crime drama about drug manufacturing and trafficking. He questioned the contrast between the party leadership’s public statements against drugs and the allegations involving its functionary.

The accused's alleged participation and the larger network are the subject of investigation, it is said

Stalin Accuses Government of Administrative Failure

The DMK leader has used the two incidents to question the TVK government’s performance in law and order. He said the drug seizure and prison escape raised questions about public safety and the administration’s ability to prevent criminal activity.

His criticism is a part of the continuous political struggle between the DMK and the ruling TVK led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay.

The government’s response and the outcome of official investigations will help to establish the circumstances surrounding both incidents.

Political Row Intensifies in Tamil Nadu.

The two TV-series references have added a dramatic dimension to the political debate in Tamil Nadu. Stalin’s remarks link separate incidents to his broader criticism of the government’s handling of crime, drugs and prison security.

And while the opposition has called for accountability, the drug seizure and search for the escaped inmates are central to the developments.

The incidents will keep law and order at the forefront of the government’s consciousness as it faces questions from political opponents and the public.
