Staying in Control: The Inner Advantage of Great Business Leaders

In an environment of uncertainty and rapid change akin to present-day business, leadership has not become the business of authority. The best leaders remain calm and clear and consistent — and especially when uncertainty is strong. Leadership control is not about managing the people, it is about self control.

Good leaders focus on four essential areas- the mind, emotions, actions, and environment. Controlling the mind: strategic thinking begins at the inside. Decisions about leadership often have been made long before they hit the ground step--in your thoughts. Successful leaders do so by remaining away from negative or impulsive thinking. As part of boosting self-confidence when dealing in a difficult problem, encourage sound self-talk.

Learn to think less of how to think more and spend your energy on things you can control — not on things you can’t. Discipline the mind results in better judgment, a more strategic idea and long-term thinking capability.

Emotion Regulation Skills: Emotional Intelligence at Its Core. Leadership that is strong is leader whose emotional intelligence is an innate part.

Effective leaders: Stop and consider what you’re going to say — especially when the stakes or pressure is high. Identify emotions, but don’t let them govern your decisions. Be mindful and self-reflect, take some time to be present — and return to a steady state of being — and your emotions.

Govern action, not words: Conformity Credibility. If leaders said yes to it, it built trust and encouraged employees to offer their suggestions. In other words, leadership is all about action.

Great leaders: Keep everyday decisions in accordance with the work of the institution and its values in the long term. Decisions can be too painful but choose discipline over convenience.

Show consistency and be clear: small incremental actions can create a culture. Teams should follow leaders whose actions correlate with their words.

Lead the Environment: Culture Is Leadership Responsibility. Leaders build environments that assist, or inhibit, effective performance.

Strong leaders: Create atmospheres — physical and mental — conducive to concentration and creativity. Avoid noise, negativity and other things that are more distracting.  Just be with people who are thinking and advancing. Well-designed environments can further enhance leadership effectiveness.

Self Mastery: The Basis of Leadership. The most cherished leaders are not those who control others but self-reliant ones. Leadership shapes trust, builds confidence and responds with strength and resilience to change and uncertainty by managing thoughts, feelings, actions and surrounding circumstances. In business, being in control isn’t a reflex — it’s a discipline exercised daily.
