AI is being deployed by India Railways to monitor bedsheets cleanliness and laundry processes.
At the same time, the new AI-based system is to prevent stains, tears and other defects from getting to passengers when they arrive; so the train's hygiene and service quality is high to some extent.
Cases of stained or poorly washed bedsheets and blankets have been reported for years by railway travelers, especially on long-distance trains. AI-enabled inspection systems in selected railway laundries are being used by Indian Railways to address these problems.
These systems employ computers and machine learning algorithms to scan every bedsheet after washing.
AI cameras can detect stains, discoloration, holes and damaged fabric that are not visible on manual inspections. Bedsheets that fail the quality check are automatically removed to be re-washed or replaced. This greatly reduces the chances of passengers getting unclean or damaged linen on their journey.
Besides linen inspection, Indian Railways installed CCTV surveillance systems in laundry facilities. The washing, drying, ironing, folding and packaging operations are monitored continuously, and cameras are installed in all laundry facilities.
These cameras ensure that standard operating procedures are followed in the process and railway employees are held accountable in order to build a sense of accountability in the company.
The integrated AI inspection and CCTV monitoring will also help to improve operational efficiency, minimize human error, and maintain uniform quality standards in the production of railway laundry units. The technology will also make it possible to reduce water and detergent consumption by flagging up problems in the washing process, officials say.
The initiative fits in well with the Indian Railways’ digital transformation agenda for passenger service transformation, which includes AI, Internet of Things (IoT), and automation. AI-based track monitoring, predictive maintenance, facial recognition at stations, and smart ticketing systems are among the technology-driven solutions introduced by the railway network in the last few years.
Passengers will be able to get cleaner linen, better hygiene, and more confidence in railway service. Although thousands of bedsheets are sorted out in railway laundries in a day, manual inspection is time-consuming and susceptible to oversight. AI is more accurate and faster in performing the inspections, cutting the load on staff.
The railway authorities will eventually scale the technology to more laundry units in the country if the pilot program is successful. Indian Railways' desire to have a cleaner, safer and more comfortable travel experience is reflected in this move.
