On October 6, Google will add Claude to its productivity applications via a specific add-on. Users can ask Claude to draft, edit, analyse, restructure and restyle files without constantly switching between different browser tabs.

The integration is currently available in public beta for paid Claude plans. Anthropic has also introduced Google Docs, Sheets and Slides connectors that enable users to create and edit files directly from the Claude interface.

How Claude Works Inside Google Workspace

The main integration comes through a Claude sidebar that appears alongside an open Google Doc, Sheet or Slide deck.

Once installed, Claude can understand the file that the user has open and work on selected text, cells or slides. That means users can give instructions in natural language instead of manually performing every formatting or editing task.

For example, in Google Docs, users can ask Claude to rewrite a section, shorten a long document, restructure content or standardise headings.

In Google Sheets, Claude helps you build spreadsheet models, write/fix formulas, clean data and create charts. It can also help users understand how calculations in a spreadsheet work.

Claude can create new slides for Google Slides, redesign existing presentations and improve the overall layout and readability of a deck.

The Google Workspace Marketplace listing describes the tool as an assistant that can build, edit and analyse work directly inside Docs, Sheets and Slides.

What Can Claude Do In Docs, Sheets And Slides?

The capabilities vary depending on the Google Workspace application.

Google Docs: Claude can draft and rewrite content, restructure long documents, change formatting and help analyse the text. Users can also select specific portions of a document and ask the AI to work on them.

Google Sheets: Claude can generate formulas, troubleshoot spreadsheet calculations, clean up inconsistent data and help build financial or analytical models. It can also create charts based on spreadsheet information.

Google Slides: Claude can draft presentations, create new slides, shorten text-heavy slides and restyle decks while retaining the visual style of the presentation.

One interesting aspect is that Claude's changes are a direct part of the file. Google records these edits in the document's version history, so that if necessary, users can view or undo changes if they want.

How To Use Claude With Google Docs, Sheets And Slides

It is possible to install the Claude add-on from the Google Workspace Marketplace.

Users can follow these steps:

  1. Open the Google Workspace Marketplace and search for Claude.
  2. Install the Claude for Google Workspace add-on.
  3. Open a Google Doc, Sheet or Slide presentation.
  4. Go to Extensions > Claude > Open Claude.
  5. Make sure you are on a Claude account.
  6. Give Claude an instruction about the file or select specific text, cells or slides first.
  7. Review proposed or completed changes.

Anthropic says the integration is currently available in beta for Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise Claude plans. Users also need a Google account that allows them to install Google Workspace Marketplace applications.

For organisations with managed Google Workspace accounts, the administrator must approve or install the add-on before employees can use it.

Users can control how Claude makes changes.

Claude does not necessarily have to make each change automatically.

The integration also has an "Ask before edits" mode, which is default. In this mode, Claude explains what it wants to change and waits for the user to approve the action.

There is also an "Accept all edits" mode, which allows Claude to make normal content changes without stopping for approval every time. However, some actions like adding links, inserting images from web addresses, and changing file access still need additional approval.

So this gives more control over how much autonomy the users want to give the AI.

Claude Also Gets Google File Connectors

In addition to the Workspace add-on, Anthropic has introduced connectors for Google Docs, Sheets and Slides in beta.

These work differently from the sidebar integration. Instead of starting inside a Google file, users can start from Claude and ask it to create or edit Google files via the connected services.

The connectors can allow Claude to work with files stored in Google Drive while respecting existing file and domain permissions.

This means that users are able to work with Google files in two ways: they can add Claude into the document using the Workspace add-on or bring their Google files into a Claude-based workflow through the connectors.

What About Privacy And Access?

Anthropic says the Workspace add-on is designed to work with the specific file that the user has opened. Claude is not able to browse through other files in the user's Google Drive via the add-on.

The company also says the extension requests permissions needed to display the Claude sidebar and read and edit the file in which it has been opened.

But users can still check the permissions and account settings before connecting an AI service to work documents, especially when it is sensitive business or personal information.

Claude's arrival in Google Workspace is another option for people who want AI in their everyday productivity tools. The integration also deepens competition between Anthropic's Claude, Google's own AI tools and other workplace assistants.

For users who spend most of their day working in documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, the biggest change is simple: Claude can now work directly in the Google file instead of having users copy content across different applications.
