Google announced the offer in its recent back-to-school update. On Gemini, a student hub will also be created to help students organise their studies and prepare for exams.

However, there is an important point students should know. The plan offered depends on the country.

United States students can get Google AI Pro for free for a year. The plan normally costs $19.99 per month.

Students outside the US, including those in more than 140 eligible markets, will get Google AI Plus free for one year. Google says this plan has Gemini Omni, higher usage limits, and 400 GB of storage.

How do you claim the free Gemini student offer?

As such, students can start the process through Google's dedicated student hub at gemini.google.com/students.

Students need to sign in to their Google account first to check if they are eligible for the offer. Google may need students to verify their student status before they can start the plan.

Once eligibility is confirmed, students can follow the instructions given on the student page to activate their free year.

Google has also created a student hub that brings several learning tools together in one place. Students can create study notebooks, make flashcards, practice quizzes and organise their academic work.

The new tools might be useful for students with huge amounts of study material to manage. Gemini can organise information and create study resources based on the material provided by the student.

Google has also added more learning-focused features to Gemini. Students can use more interactive visualisations and research features to really learn difficult subjects. Gemini Live also helps students to discuss research topics and study material in the course of conversation.

As for students outside of the US, the free plan is Google AI Plus rather than Google AI Pro. This is important because the two plans do not have the same benefits.

Google AI Plus offers 400 GB of storage and 2x greater usage limits in Gemini. The US students who receive Google AI Pro get higher usage limits, 5 TB of storage, and additional features such as Gemini integration with Google apps like Gmail and Google Docs.

What students should know before signing up for it?

The offer is free for one year, but students need to look at the terms of the subscription.

Google requires a valid payment method when signing up. The subscription can automatically renew after the free period ends unless the user cancels it. For the US Google AI Pro offer, Google says the regular price is $19.99 per month after the free period. For the non-US Google AI Plus offer, the standard price is $4.99 per month or the local currency equivalent.

Students who do not wish to pay for the free year should remember to terminate the subscription before the offer is over.

I find it so easy to forget you are on a free period, and you have a subscription that you signed up for months ago.

The new student offer also includes several AI tools that could make studying easier. Gemini helps students to create practice questions, organise notes, figure out difficult concepts and prepare study material.

Google’s student hub is designed to bring these features together instead of students searching through different tools.

With AI-based learning tools for AI-based learning on its products, Google is also expanding AI-based learning features to its products. Google says the new education tools are needed for students to understand difficult topics, prepare for exams, and manage things well (and keep things organised).

For college students, the big draw is clearly the free year of premium AI access.

But students should remember that AI should aid their learning, rather than compete with it. They need to check what they could learn from AI (in academic research, academic assignments or exam preparation).

The offer also differs from Google's previous student promotion in India. Google had offered eligible Indian students one year of Google AI Pro in 2025, but that promotion has ended. The offer for 2026 has different country availability and plan details.

So students in India should not assume that the current US Google AI Pro offer automatically applies to them.

The safest way to check eligibility is to visit the Google student page and sign in to Google with your own Google account.

If students are eligible, they could be able to get access to advanced Gemini features without paying for a full year.

With AI becoming increasingly common in education, Google’s new student offer gives college students another way to use AI for research, organisation and exam preparation.

If you are eligible, checking the offer now makes sense. Just remember to read the terms, check which plan is available in your country, and keep track of the renewal date if you do not want to continue with a paid subscription later.
