Hyderabad Ration Rice Scam: Officials Reportedly Raid Depots in Karmanghat

Reports of an alleged ration rice racket emerged in Hyderabad, Telangana, with Civil Supplies and Vigilance officials carrying out simultaneous raids at rice depots in Karmanghat. They collected samples from a number of rice shops, with rice from the Public Distribution System (PDS) being processed, repackaged and sold in the open market as branded fine rice, the report claimed.

The allegations have raised concerns about the diversion of government-supplied rice intended for eligible beneficiaries. But the Karmanghat operation details, including how much rice was seized and who was arrested, will need to be confirmed.

Ration Rice allegedly sold as Branded Fine Rice

According to the allegations, operators procure ration rice to polish it, make it appear better and package it into bags with private brand names. This rice is then sold in the market at considerably higher prices.

The rumor is that some of this rice is marketed for around ₹80 to ₹100 per kilogram. It is not known the exact product pricing and the brands used in the Karmanghat case.

If these practices are established, they could mislead consumers who buy rice thinking it is a specific commercial variety. They could also undermine the PDS as a means to offer subsidised or free food grains to eligible households.

The officials collected rice samples.

According to the report of the Karmanghat operation, Civil Supplies and Vigilance officials carried out inspections at various places and collected samples from several rice shops.

It also alleges that some shop owners closed their shops and left after officials arrived. What is clear about whether any persons were formally identified, detained, or booked in relation to this particular operation remains unclear.

Rice samples can help authorities investigate the variety and characteristics of the grain. Investigators would also need to verify stock records, purchase documents, packaging details and the movement of rice between beneficiaries, intermediaries, mills and retailers to establish whether government-distributed supplies were diverted.

No confirmed numbers for seizures, inspections of establishments, or the financial value of the alleged activity were available in the reports reviewed for this article.

Further concerns over Ration Rice Diversion in Telangana

The incident came as part of a wider concern about the diversion and commercial resale of PDS rice in Telangana.

Andhra Jyothy published a report on 28 October 2026 that claimed ration rice was being bought from beneficiaries through intermediaries, polished at mills and packed in bags carrying private brand names before it was sold in the open market. The report also described the movement of such rice to other states.

Telangana authorities are now investigating the alleged irregularities in the distribution of government-allotted fine rice to the Food Corporation of India. On October 25 and 26, the Telangana Crime Investigation Department filed three cases and arrested 14 rice millers for allegedly diverting the fine-quality paddy and supplying cheaper coarse rice in its place.

That investigation concerns rice procurement and delivery irregularities and should not be seen as a confirmation of the separate allegations surrounding the reported Karmanghat raids.

Investigation and further details to be forthcoming.

The reported Karmanghat operation shows the importance of monitoring the supply chain of government-distributed food grains. To establish whether rice was indeed diverted, repackaged or sold in violation of the relevant rules will require evidence and findings from the authorities.

More detail on the results of the collected samples, any seizures or arrests, and any consequences to those responsible will be forthcoming, along with possible legal action taken against those who are responsible.

Until officials have verified their findings, the allegations over the Karmanghat shops and the alleged branding of packaging should be treated as unconfirmed.
