Google has raised the price of Pixel 10a in India and it’s much more expensive now than at launch. The smartphone, which was launched earlier this year at a price of Rs 49,999, is now available at the Google Store in the range of Rs 55,999. The price hike is Rs 6,000 and puts Pixel 10a in a higher price bracket.
The price hike is also coming at a time when smartphone manufacturers are under increasing pressure from component costs. Memory prices are under pressure and that adds to the cost for companies in the global smartphone market. In recent months, too, most of the big smartphone brands have changed the prices for certain models and the price of the Pixel 10a is part of a larger trend for mobile phones.
Google Pixel 10a Now Costs Rs 55,999 In India
The Pixel 10a was marketed as an entry point to Google's Pixel smartphone line in India when it was launched. At a price of Rs 49,999, it was also a great deal for the people who wanted Google’s software experience, camera and Tensor-based features without stepping up to the company’s more expensive Pixel handsets.
After the price revision, the same smartphone now costs Rs 55,999. That is, buyers are paying Rs 6,000 more than the launch price, which is around 12 per cent.
But the price hike does not come with a hardware upgrade. The specifications of the Pixel 10a are unchanged, so customers are paying more for the same device that was available at a lower price when it was launched.
The phone is still using Google's Tensor G4 processor and has a 48MP primary camera. So the price revision is not being presented as a new variant or upgraded model.
Pixel 10a Cashback Offer Brings Some Relief
Google is offering instant cashback options for eligible customers to reduce the effective purchase price. Buyers using qualifying HDFC Bank or ICICI Bank credit cards for EMI transactions can receive cashback of up to Rs 3,000.
With the maximum cashback benefit, the effective price of the Pixel 10a can come down to Rs 52,999. However, this is still Rs 3,000 higher than the phone's original launch price of Rs 49,999.
The cashback offer also has eligibility parameters and buyers are advised to check bank, card and EMI requirements to purchase it. The availability of such offers can also change over time.
For customers who were considering the Pixel 10a at the original price, the new pricing could affect the value proposition of the smartphone. The cashback does reduce some of that but not completely in response to the Rs 6,000 increase.
Pixel 10a Price Also Rises In The US
Google's price revision is not limited to the Indian market. The Pixel 10a has also become more expensive in the United States.
The smartphone was originally priced at $499 in the US. Following the price change, its starting price has risen to $599. Also, the 256GB version has seen a price increase and now it is priced at $699.
The US price change corresponds to a $100 increase over the previous starting price. Of course, as with the Indian market, the hardware specifications of the device remain unchanged.
Google has not explained why its pricing has changed. But the price changes come at a time when smartphone manufacturers are faced with increasing memory and other component costs for modern mobile devices.
Rising Component Costs Put Pressure On Smartphone Prices
Memory has become an increasingly important factor in smartphone manufacturing costs as demand for higher-capacity storage and memory components continues to rise. Smartphones are also increasingly dependent on advanced components to support artificial intelligence features, increasingly capable cameras and demanding software.
When component costs rise, manufacturers can respond in several ways - including absorbing the higher cost, reducing promotional discounts or increasing retail prices. The Pixel 10a price revision implies that Google is passing on at least part of the cost to consumers.
The impact of higher component costs has also been visible across the wider smartphone industry. Samsung and Apple have revised prices of some devices, which is indicative of the pressure on other major players.
With a smartphone launch price that is not the same during the sale process, price changes may depend on when the customer is looking for discounts or purchasing on the day of big sales.
Is The Pixel 10a Still An Affordable Pixel Option?
Despite the price increase, the Pixel 10a remains below Google's more premium Pixel smartphones. But the Rs 6,000 hike changes the comparison with other devices in the same price segment.
At Rs 49,999, the Pixel 10a was a much more aggressive entry price. At Rs 55,999, it can be compared to other smartphones that have different processors, cameras, displays, battery and charging technology.
The cashback offer of Rs 3,000 could help to soften the hit for such customers. But customers who are not eligible to receive the cashback will still have to pay the full price.
The same specifications also mean that customers should look at the Pixel 10a based on the existing features rather than looking forward to any hardware benefits from the price hike.
What Pixel 10a Buyers Should Know
The recent price change means prospective buyers should be aware of the final cost when they order the Pixel 10a in India. The Pixel 10a is priced at Rs 55,999 in India now and was launched at Rs 49,999. In fact, a HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank credit card customer can get it to be Rs 52,999 in India with the cashback offer.
Google has also increased the US starting price from $499 to $599, while the 256GB model now costs $699. This is a change that isn't being made publicly, but we think there is some context in how memory and component prices have increased together.
If the Pixel 10a buyer had already planned to buy it, the cashback offer could minimize any extra cost. But now people who are comparing it to other phones will need to look at it at its new price instead of its original launch price.
