Apple could have another big hardware surprise before its much-anticipated iPhone 18 Pro launch in September.
The company is also preparing a new Mac mini that is expected to be released in a matter of days, and the compact desktop is ready to be launched around Apple’s iPhone launch date.
The timing is especially interesting because demand for the Mac mini has increased sharply as developers and power users increasingly use small Macs to run artificial intelligence workloads locally.
Apple itself has pointed out that the Mac mini and Mac Studio are popular machines for AI agents, which can do tasks far less dependent on cloud computing platforms.
AI Agents Are Changing Mac Mini Demand
AI agents are becoming more capable of handling multi-step tasks coding, research, automation, etc. in the multi-step workflow. To run these systems locally requires a lot of computing power and memory, which is why Apple's compact desktop is a good choice for users who want an always-on AI machine.
The Mac mini’s combination of Apple silicon, unified memory, and relatively low power consumption has attracted developers experimenting with local AI tools.
Recently, demand for AI-driven applications has been so strong that supply shortages have emerged, especially for larger memory configurations.
Apple's current Mac mini line is powered by the M4 and M4 Pro chips and has already got hardware for demanding workloads and an on-device Neural Engine for Apple Intelligence features.
M5 or M6 Chip
The main question on the forthcoming refresh is which Apple silicon chip will power it. There is some speculation that Apple has tested Mac mini versions using M5 and M6 generations, but it is not clear at this point.
The refresh may be mostly an internal processor update rather than a major redesign. That would mean that it would be more likely to be a press release announcement rather than a big launch.
There is also some uncertainty when Apple will release an M5 Pro version. Supply constraints affecting memory and other components could determine which configurations reach consumers.
Why Launch It Before the iPhone 18 Pro
Apple’s September launch typically draws huge attention, and the iPhone is of paramount importance. A separate release of a Mac mini would allow Apple to address pent-up demand without competing directly with its flagship smartphone announcements.
It would also underscore Apple's increasing focus on AI-enabled hardware. With Apple Intelligence permeating the Apple ecosystem, more powerful Macs might be more important for developers and users building or running AI applications.
Now, Apple has not officially confirmed the launch date or specifications of the next Mac mini.
If the reports are accurate, Apple’s smallest desktop might become one of the biggest hardware news stories of August, just before the focus moves to the iPhone 18 Pro.
