Some WhatsApp users were surprised to read WhatsApp messages abruptly and locked out of their accounts on Monday evening without warning or explanation. The widespread problem started at 8:00 PM IST and hit most people in India at that time. Users were warned that their chats were “under review” and they needed to wait to be back into the WhatsApp world.

The persistent in-app warning explained that user account activity and device information were being checked for compliance with the platform’s standards of service. It had a general timeline that notifications for the review results would typically come within twenty-four hours. And while the app provided links to support pages detailing responsible platform usage and security guidelines for stolen phones, it never provided a specific trigger or specific policy violation that led to the sudden restriction for each individual user.

Meta and WhatsApp. A WhatsApp representative told us that there had been widespread account reviews, but when asked to comment on the volume of public complaints, said they were not. Rather, the company claimed, the mass restrictions were accidental as a result of ongoing security efforts to prevent malicious actors and defend the community.

"This is a part of our company’s daily work to guard against abuse of our service. We’re always banning and restricting accounts to keep users safe,” the company said in a statement to the Press Trust of India. “And the automated security systems make mistakes, and we do everything on the spot to fix it as soon as possible," the company said. But that was not the answer to the basic questions about whether it was due to a technical software problem or an error in automated detection or moderation on WhatsApp. WhatsApp wouldn’t say how many accounts were affected by this wave of reviews and how many accounts were closed.

If you are in a digital blackout, the worst thing that happened to you was the complete lack of information from the platform and the lack of communication from the platform. Social media platforms exploded with complaints from frustrated users who had no idea why their accounts were running normally just minutes before the shutdown. Many users took to X to tell the story of their frustration at being stuck in a generic twenty-four-hour countdown timer for no reason and no way to call or get in touch with those who could help them.

WhatsApp has received multiple compliance reports every month under India’s Information Technology Rules and has millions of regular bans for spam and mass messaging, but Monday’s event was different. This mass deployment of “under review” status was less an evidence-based ban on the most likely policy violators and more like a chaotic system-wide mishap. As users slowly came back into the loop or awaited their outcome, the incident highlighted the continuing challenge of automated platform moderation and user transparency.
