After the meeting, Jaishankar wrote details of the discussion in a post on X. He said both sides had reviewed progress across major areas of cooperation and discussed regional and global developments.

“Guided by our leadership and sustained engagement across government and industry, we are working towards our Strategic Partnership,” Jaishankar said.

His remarks highlighted that regular diplomatic contact between government institutions and businesses in order to strengthen relations is important.

The talks are to conclude as both countries get back in touch after diplomatic discord.

Trade and Investment Remain Key Priorities.

Trade and investment were the major topics covered in this meeting. Strong commercial relations would create business opportunities in both countries and economic development.

India and Canada have been trying to revive the closer economic relationship. Trade talks would also help to develop market access, investment and partnership among companies.

But more talks and tangible policy action are required before any new trade arrangements can be achieved.

Energy and Defence Cooperation on the Agenda

Energy was also a big topic of discussion. Canada has resources and expertise in critical minerals, clean energy and nuclear energy, which can support India’s long-term energy and industrial objectives.

In these sectors, cooperation could potentially help to diversify supply chains and create new investment opportunities and technology sharing opportunities.

Defence cooperation also was in the talks. Continued engagement could support dialogue on regional security and identify areas where the two countries can work together.

The outcome of the last meeting will depend on the outcome of discussions and any formal announcement by the two governments.

Education and People-to-People Exchanges

India and Canada have several ties in education and community. Indian students, professionals and diaspora communities have been very much involved in the relationship of both countries.

Education, mobility and people-to-people exchanges can further develop cultural understanding and academic cooperation and professional opportunities.

We need to keep these connections alive as both governments work to build confidence and to expand a lot of the practical cooperation.

New Delhi’s meeting is reflective of the continuing partnership between India and Canada on economic, strategic and social issues.

The discussion covered a wide range of issues but its long-term importance will be determined by whether both sides convert diplomatic engagement into concrete progress on trade, energy, defence and other common interests.

For now, Jaishankar’s statement says that both governments will continue to seek a better strategic partnership with ongoing cooperation.
