Accident Raises Concerns About Himalayan Aviation Safety
Pheriche is an important settlement on the Everest Base Camp trekking route. It is in Nepal’s Khumbu region and trekkers and climbers heading towards Mount Everest often visit Pheriche.
Helicopters are important in the region: they transport tourists, support trekking and medical evacuations into difficult mountain terrain.
However, operating aircraft in the Himalayas is more difficult than elsewhere because of the mountainous terrain and challenging flying conditions.
The latest crash has once again drawn attention to the safety of helicopter operations in Nepal’s busy trekking and tourism destinations.
More details about the accident are expected as authorities gather information and investigate the circumstances of the collision.
