The National Testing Agency (NTA) has opened an opportunity for experienced educators, academicians, researchers and subject specialists to contribute to the preparation and quality review of some of India’s major national-level examinations. The agency has invited Expressions of Interest (EoI) for empanelment as Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) for confidential academic assignments, including question-setting, review, moderation and translation work.
The initiative covers examination-related activities related to major NTA assessments, such as NEET, JEE, UGC-NET and CUET. The selected experts will not be regular NTA employees in this process. Rather they will be empanelled to do academic assignments based on the agency’s criteria, their subject knowledge and availability.
NTA Recruitment 2026: Who Can Apply?
According to the latest information released about the SME empanelment exercise, serving or retired faculty members, professors, school educators and other domain experts with demonstrated expertise in their respective subjects can apply. Experienced researchers, academicians and other professionals with relevant subject knowledge are also being considered for the panel.
The opportunity is for those with a good level of knowledge in the subjects for which they apply. The applicants are only to apply if they have knowledge which is recognised from one of the domains of their interests and have good academic or professional experience.
According to the criteria for eligibility, a Master's degree or equivalent qualification in the relevant subject is required and the required marks or equivalent CGPA have to be specified in the NTA criteria. A PhD in the relevant or allied discipline is preferred in the reported criteria. For the professions such as engineering, medicine, law and pharmacy, the same professional qualification may be considered.
School-level subject experts with appropriate academic qualifications and significant teaching experience may also be considered, depending on the subject and the panel’s requirements.
What will NTA Paper Setters do?
Being in the NTA SME panel involves much more than simply writing questions. Experts may be assigned responsibilities at different stages of the examination development process.
One of the most important responsibilities is item authoring and question design. The experts must prepare questions in terms of format, difficulty level, examination blueprints and prescribed curricula. Questions should not be about recall but about the candidates’ ability to understand and apply concepts.
SMEs may also be involved in review and vetting. This can include checking questions for conceptual accuracy, clarity, syllabus alignment, appropriate difficulty and other quality parameters. Experts can also review questions prepared by other specialists.
Moderation is also a major responsibility. It is to maintain consistency, uniformity and neutrality in the content of examination topics. Experts might also help verify answers and map curriculum due to their part.
Translation And Regional Language Work
The NTA is also seeking expertise in translation and transadaptation. Since several NTA examinations are conducted in different languages, accurate translation is an important part of the examination process.
Experts in this field may need to verify that translated questions accurately represent the meaning of the original material. Also, the language used should be clear and culturally appropriate for candidates in different regions.
Coaching Institute Association: Eligibility.
Applicants should be aware of the NTA's conflict-of-interest requirements. The current empanelment process suggests that those who work within coaching or test-preparation firms are not eligible to participate. The requirements also cover past commercial associations with coaching and examination-preparation companies.
The purpose of these restrictions is to protect the confidentiality and independence of examination-related academic work. Applicants should declare any possible conflicts of interest clearly and unequivocally. False or incomplete statements can affect empanelment.

The last day to submit the Expression of Interest is October 9, 2026. Candidates eligible to apply must submit their applications to NTA on the official website nta.ac.in.

How will The Panel Work?
