India pays tribute to former President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam as one of the country’s most inspirational leaders and visionary scientists and a great teacher.
Also known as the “Missile Man of India” and “People’s President,” Dr. Kalam inspired millions through his work in science, education and nation-building.

Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam was the 11th President of India from 2002 to 2007. Before entering politics, he was instrumental in India's missile and space development. His leadership in the development of the Agni and Prithvi missile systems earned him nationwide recognition and he was awarded the title of "Missile Man of India."
Dr. Kalam's biggest commitment to young people was an unwavering one. He felt young people were the future of India and he would spend a lot of time in India talking to the young people. His motivational speeches made children want to dream big, work hard and contribute positively to society.
Dr. Kalam wrote many well-known books “Wings of Fire,” “Ignited Minds,” “India 2020” that still inspire his readers. His vision of India becoming a developed country is still very much with us.
The former President died on July 27, 2015, while giving a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Shillong. His sudden death as he was doing what he loved most teaching students left the whole nation in mourning.
