Somvar Vrat, held every Monday, is one of the best-known and celebrated fasts for Lord Shiva. The vrat is associated with peace, prosperity, good health, marital harmony, and spiritual growth to those who observe it. The Solah Somvar Vrat is also celebrated for 16 consecutive Mondays to seek Lord Shiva's divine blessings.
And although customs vary from region to region, family to family, the heart of the fast is devotion, self-control, and true worship.
Somvar Vrat has a spiritual significance
For the worship of Shiva, Monday is especially auspicious. Hindu custom says that the devotees fast to:
- Remove obstacles from life.
- Seek good health and prosperity.

- Fulfil your own wishes with sincere dedication.
- Strengthen spiritual discipline and inner peace.
The month of Shravan (Sawan) is particularly sacred for observing Somvar Vrat.
Puja Samagri (Items Required)
Before we start the worship, arrange the following things:
- Shiva Lingam or an idol/photo of Lord Shiva.
- Gangajal (holy water).
- Clean water for Abhishekam.
- Milk.
- Curd.
- Honey.
- Ghee.
- Sugar.
- Bilva (Bel) leaves.

- Incense sticks and camphor.
- Ghee lamp (Diya).
- Fruits.
- Coconut.
- Seasonal sweets.
- Rudraksha mala (optional).
Somvar Vrat Puja Vidhi.
1. Begin the Day Early
Wake up before sunrise, bathe, wear clean clothes (white or light-coloured), and take a pledge (Sankalp) to observe the fast with devotion.
2. Clean the Puja area
Clean the prayer room and put fresh flowers on the altar. Put the Shiva Lingam or the Lord Shiva image respectfully.
3. Perform Abhishekam.
Offer the following one after another:
- Water.
- Gangajal.
- Milk.
- Curd.
- Honey.
- Ghee.
- Sugar.
- Water again to cleanse the Shiva Lingam.
This ritual symbolizes purification and surrender to the divine.
4. Offer Bilva leaves
Give Bilva leaves, white flowers, sandalwood paste, fruits, and sweets, and pray with devotion.
5. Chant Shiva Mantras.
Recite any of the following:
Om Namah Shivaya
Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra
Shiva Chalisa
Rudram (if familiar)
Take a few minutes to meditate and ask Lord Shiva for His blessings.
6. Perform Aarti
Light a diya and incense sticks before performing Shiva Aarti. Request prayers for your family and society.
What Can You Eat During Somvar Vrat?
Depending on family traditions, devotees may have a complete fast or eat vrat-friendly foods.
Common foods include:
- Fresh fruits.
- Milk and curd.
- Coconut water.
- Dry fruits.
- Sabudana preparations.
- Roasted peanuts.
- Makhana (fox nuts).
- Singhara or kuttu flour preparations (where customary).
Drink sufficient water to remain hydrated unless observing a stricter traditional fast.
Foods to Avoid
Avoid consuming:
- Onion and garlic.
- Meat, fish, and eggs.
- Alcohol and tobacco.
- Processed or junk food.
- Grains and regular salt if following a strict vrat.

Dos and Don'ts
Dos. Maintain cleanliness in body and mind. Speak politely and avoid arguments. Spend time in prayer and meditation. Help those in need through charity. Read or listen to stories related to Lord Shiva. Break the fast peacefully after evening prayers or according to family tradition. Don'ts. Avoid anger and harsh speech. Do not consume intoxicants. Do not hurt others through words or actions. Refrain from unnecessary negative thoughts. Do not waste food or water.
Though rituals are important, Hindu scriptures state that true devotion, sincerity, compassion, and good behavior are more important than elaborate ceremonies. Somvar Vrat is accepted with humility and a pure heart as the best way to seek Lord Shiva’s blessing.
