The Weight of Your Own Thoughts

“Nothing can break you like your thoughts.”

The Weight of Your Own Thoughts

This statement sounds sensational at first blush. But when you think about it deeply, you see how exactly true that statement is. The picture of a person with a large stone in place of their head stands for what I believe are very strong allegories. It’s the physical burden that many of us put on ourselves every single day thinking too much, being afraid, doubting, feeling guilt, comparing ourselves to others, and struggling with anxiety.

The most difficult battles we wage are seldom external to us. They are within.

The Silent Pressure of Overthinking

Overthinking can cause small problems in large mountains. In our minds, a single mistake becomes a life-defining failure. A small delay signals to us that we’re not up to the task. We replay conversations, anticipate worst-case scenarios, and make problems that may never be.

The mind, unharnessed, can weigh more than any tangible weight.

Just as the rock in the image, our thoughts can obscure what’s clear. They can prevent us from getting a glimpse at opportunities, happiness, or solutions. Negative thinking patterns are something that becomes more and more entrenched as time goes on.

Self-Doubt: The Hidden Destroyer

For many dreams, dreams do not die from external hindrances; they die out of inner reluctance.

“I’m not ready.” “I’m not good enough.” “What if I fail?”

These quiet thoughts sabotage progress. They stop action before it even starts. In reality, the majority of limitations are self-created. By continually questioning ourselves we construct invisible, real walls.

Breaking Free from Mental Weight

The solution is not thinking less, it is thinking more clearly.

It is easier, and with that there is more opportunity. The answer must start with some awareness. Are negative thoughts facts, or fears? Replace self-criticism with introspection. Replace fear with small steps to take instead.

You need not clear up every doubt overnight. You need only lighten the load.

Practice mindfulness. Focus on what is in your hands (so far). Take action in the face of uncertain situations. When you change your thinking, you change your reality.

Final Thought

There are challenges in life to come. But the hardest part is understanding your mind. It will be when you control your thoughts as opposed to mindlessly reacting to them.

The rock only grows heavy when you carry it.

Let it go.
