As a loss of weight, walking or running is one of the most common questions people ask. Both are great cardiovascular exercises that burn calories, improve heart health, and assist in overall fitness. But your fitness level, health, goal, and preferences are the most important factors.
I’m a beginner in fitness and a former fitness lover and walking and running can help me to make the right decision for weight loss.
Walking for Weight Loss
Walking is a low impact exercise and easy to incorporate into daily life. It requires no special equipment other than comfortable shoes and can be done almost anywhere.
Benefits of Walking
1. Beginner-Friendly
Walking is great for beginners to exercise, older adults or people recovering from injuries. It doesn’t put as much stress on joints as running.
2. Burns calories
While walking burns fewer calories per minute than running, brisk walking can also help with weight loss along with a healthy diet.
3. Reduces injury hazard
Walking greatly decreases the risk of injuries (shin splints, knee pain, stress fractures).
4. Improves heart health
Walking decreases blood pressure, improves circulation and lowers the risk of cardiovascular disease.
5. Supports Mental Well-being
Walking outdoors can reduce stress, improve mood, and improve mental clarity.
Running for Weight Loss
Running is a higher-intensity exercise that burns more calories in less time. It is suitable for people with a reasonably good fitness level and healthy joints.
Benefits of Running
1. Higher Calorie Burn
Running burns more calories than walking over the same amount of time so it’s a great strategy for quick calorie burn.
2. Increases metabolism
High-intensity exercises result in an “afterburn effect”meaning we burn calories after the workout is over.
3. Improves cardiovascular fitness
Running boosts heart and lung capacity.
4. Builds Strong Bones
The impact from running can help increase bone density and reduce the risk of osteoporosis when practiced safely.
5. Saves Time
If your schedule is busy, running allows you to burn more calories in a shorter workout.
Walking vs running: Calorie comparison
For a person's age, weight, pace, time and duration, the number of calories burned depends on the age, weight, pace and length of time.
For a 155 pounds (70 kg) person.
- Walking at 4 mph for 30 minutes burns about 150–170 calories
- Running at 6 mph for 30 minutes burns about 300–370 calories
While running burns more calories per minute, walking can still give great weight loss results when done consistently and for longer periods of time.
Which Burns more fat
Running burns more calories but walking can also be an effective factor in fat loss, particularly when done at a brisk pace for 45-60 minutes.
Saying that the key to weight loss is to keep a calorie deficit, where you burn more calories than you consume. Walking and running are the ways to that.
Which exercise is better for beginners
Walking is better if you:
- Have excess body weight
- Experience joint pain
- Are over 50 years old
- Are recovering from injury
- Have not exercised regularly
Once your fitness improves, you can gradually introduce jogging or interval running
Combining Walking and Running
Many fitness experts recommend combining both exercises for maximum benefits.
For example:
- Walk 5 minutes to warm up
- Alternate 2 minutes of running with 3 minutes of walking
- Repeat for 30–40 minutes
- Finish with a 5-minute cool-down walk
This interval method is efficient in terms of burning calories and less strain on the body.
Tips for effective weight loss
In order to get the maximum results of any exercise you choose:
- Exercise at least 150–300 minutes per week
- Eat a healthy diet that is rich in lean protein, vegetables, fruits, and whole grains
- Get 7–9 hours of decent sleep each night
- Include strength training two to three times weekly to build muscle and increase metabolism
- Track your progress and keep consistent
Safety considerations.
Before the start of any exercise routine:
- Warm up before you do exercise and stretch after you do exercise
- And slowly let your body rest and take it slow
- Consult a doctor if you have underlying medical conditions
Both walking and running are effective exercises for weight loss, but neither is better than the other. Running burns more calories in less time, making it ideal for people who want to achieve better results and who can cope with the high-impact activity. Walking, on the other hand, is sustainable, gentle on joints, and easier to carry on as a long term habit.
Thus the best exercise is the one that you are able to do consistently. Walking and running along with healthy eating, regular physical activity, and adequate rest are the best ways to lose weight and keep your health and well being good.
