Anthony Head, Beloved Buffy Actor, Passes Away at 72

British actor Anthony Head, who played Rupert Giles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has died from pneumonia at the age of 72. His daughters Emily and Daisy Head said he died peacefully surrounded by family and left behind a career that spans television, film, and theatre.

Head first came to prominence in the UK in the 1980s with a series of popular instant coffee commercials, which made him a familiar face to viewers. In 1997 he was cast as Rupert Giles, the wise librarian and mentor to Buffy Summers in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which made him a legend.

Beyond Buffy, Head was versatile in many roles. He played King Uther Pendragon in Merlin, the Prime Minister in Little Britain, and appeared in films such as The Iron Lady. Most recently he was praised for playing Rupert Mannion, the manipulative ex-husband in Ted Lasso, where he was able to convey both warmth and menace.

Tributes poured in from colleagues and fans alike. Buffy co-star Sarah Michelle Gellar wrote a heartfelt message, recalling their bond on set, and Ted Lasso actor Brett Goldstein said Head was charming and professional. James Marsters and Emma Caulfield remembered him as a kind and steady presence, admired for his wisdom and generosity.

Born in 1954 in London, Head was the son of documentary filmmaker Seafield Head and actress Helen Shingler. His brother Murray Head also pursued acting. Anthony had two daughters, Emily and Daisy, with his lifelong partner Sarah Fisher, an animal welfare activist. He was a devoted father and a man of integrity, his family said.
