The 1993 film Khalnayak is among the defining moments of India’s Bollywood history because it made Sanjay Dutt an anti-hero of Indian cinema. More than three decades later, though, we have finished waiting for the saga to go on now.
Today, the filmmakers rocked the industry with the announcement of ‘Khalnayak Returns’, the official teaser for the highly awaited sequel. The long-awaited return of the classic Ballu Balram has created a massive buzz and a bit of excitement. In that new teaser, Sanjay Dutt is featured in a highly rugged and hostile avatar.
That 72-second trailer displays Dutt’s piercing stare and ferocity onscreen in a seamless “Ballu” energy that brought the energy of early-Nineties fans to the screen. Backed by a thickly atmospheric soundtrack and some striking visual imagery of fire and mayhem, the teaser establishes the brooding, grisly world of the original masterpiece while alluding to a looser, more modern, high-stakes action thriller.
Sanjay Dutt then tweeted about it on his socials, framing him meditating, “No story ever ends, it can only begin again. Khalnayak Returns." That declaration was followed by a grand opening of a film in Mumbai, where the posters for the movie finally got out.
Among the posters was the good aphorism, "Every story has its time... and that time has come," which sparked people's interest in the story and a sequel. "Showman" Subhash Ghai directed the 1993 version of the story, and it was a towering success among the cast with Jackie Shroff as well as Madhuri Dixit.
While the teaser serves as a big clue to the return/success of Sanjay Dutt, the production team a joint mission of Jio Studios, Aspect Entertainment and Three Dimension Motion Pictures--gives us only limited information about the rest of the cast. And will the original, cast-ready stars return, and a new breed of actors enter the franchise?
Sanjay Dutt is swamped in the studio with the success of his newest hit, Dhurandhar 2. His turnaround for Khalnayak Returns suggests that he’s ready to pay tribute to the film that changed both the course of his career, now, and down the road. It sounds like one thing Bollywood is preparing for, and the picture of its most legendary villain-hero is now back on his feet.
